[AI] How to really see a blind person - NYTimes
I think that this is a great piece. In a bid to push back against inspiration porn and to drive home the fact that the disabled are just as capable as their able-bodied counterparts, I feel that we often downplay or belittle the struggles that the disabled actually have to undergo in order to thrive. This article does a great job of dispelling the notion that being disabled is nothing more than another attribute of one's personality or no bigger a challenge than the challenges that the able-bodied routinely encounter: "One thing I do often now is public talks about learning to navigate my new life without vision. But it’s a one-way conversation. Afterward, I go to the airport where I’m reminded how hard it is to physically navigate a world not set up for people without vision. It’s a pain to find assistance at the counter. It’s a pain to get through security, which can’t seem to distinguish dog food from explosives. It’s a pain to get the airlines to move my seat to the bulkhead so there’s room for my guide dog. Don’t get me started on what a pain it is to find the bathroom for either of us." https://www.nytimes.com/2018/02/28/opinion/blind-sight-seeing.html?smid=fb-share Best, Rahul The list has now migrated to www.accessindia.inclusivehabitat.in You should now post to the id: a...@accessindia.inclusivehabitat.in Search for old postings at: http://www.mail-archive.com/accessindia@accessindia.org.in/ To unsubscribe send a message to accessindia-requ...@accessindia.org.in with the subject unsubscribe. Hi, Consider Rivo's Bluetooth keyboard. Slightly expensive, you also need to oblige someone from UK or US to save on shipping, but it's compactness and the design is worth the effort. Happy shopping!
