Wow I did not know that! Here in India people feel this way generally? And
here I come from being born outside of India but with former Indian heritage
roots, and feeling ashamed that I cannot speak Hindi. Just see how
prejudices can come from both sides! We Indians outside India feel like we
are low-born because we cannot speak home language.

So back to the topic of blindness, even we blind people feel some prejudices
towards sighted people: "They talk about me and not to me even in my
presence because they think I'm less of a human being just because I'm
blind." But may be sighted people do not feel comfortable only because they
have never dealt with a blind person before, not that they think we are less
of a human being. Or may be they do not know how to assume what we might or
might not understand in a conversation with us living without sight from
their sighted world, so they would rather not speak to us directly. There's
just so many possible factors.

Being blind and not speaking a language of the people around us is worse
because now we are also deaf (being unable to understand the language), dumb
(because we cannot speak the language), and blind as we are biologically. I
don't wish this upon my worse enemy, and I ask for your prayers that I will
find the determination to learn and speak Hindi soon enough to have enough
courage to pick up the phone and call some of you on this list, just to test
my limited diction for a conversation with you in Hindi!

Kind regards,

Hello everyone,

I feel upset when someone assume something about me because i'm a visually
impaired. oneof my Colleagues said that He assumed that i'm good at
singing.

I didn't like the way he spoke. Why can't people understand that Visually
impaired people are unique and they can have different choices. Not every
Visually Impaired person would like to sing. I had face a similar issue
while traveling. Sighted guy associted singing with Visually impaired for
begging purpose. I was not alone. I have developed hatred for film songs
because of these experience. I do follow spiritual music. Is this our
identity in society? I will request everyone to give up singing. We can
change society's perception by educating and using technology for
independent living as much as possible.

Re: [AI] Why people make false assumptions about Visually Impaired person?

2023-04-26 Thread Sujana Pulipati
Hai Minor,

Hope I address you with the correct name. First, let me ask you one
question. Are you living for yourself or for this society? Why should
we give up our interests for this society. If the society couldn't
understand the talent of visually disable people, it is their problem.
Why should we bother? Each person will have his own talent despite
being a normal or with disability. But the disable person will go
through a lot before acheiving the success. Once we get succeded and
prove our talent to this society, they will start praising us instead
of humiliating.

I lost my vision at the age of 32 where at that time I am working as a
team leader in Corporate sector. Can you even imagine the turboil I
went through after experiencing such a terrible incident when I was
building my career. I was in dark for 7 years as I was not aware of
screen readers and about the privelaeges given by the government.

Later, I come to know about the screen readers and got accustomed to
the new life. I lost the vision in 2009,where as I started my new life
in 2017 when I got the job in Govt Sector under VI reservation. I went
through a lot in the earlier days of my job where every one didn't
even acknowledge my talent. I proved myself by working on the computer
and made them realize lack of vision is not a barrier to achieve
success.

I still face the rejection from them, but who cares. I don't bother
about their behavior as I am living for myself and for my family. I
regularly attend the office and try to learn some new things in that
time using my mobile. Recently I have started writing a novel which is
my long time dream in Prathilipi App.

Everything is in our hands. If you want to live for yourself, then try
to enhance your skills in your interests rather that abandoning them
for this society. We have to fight till we reach the peak of the
mountain where our success resides.

All the best.

Warm wishes,

Sujana Pulipati

[AI] BMC should ensure elevators in skywalks for elderly, disabled: HC

2023-04-26 Thread Kanchan Pamnani
BMC should ensure elevators in skywalks for elderly, disabled: HC
swati.deshpa...@timesgroup.com Mumbai : Bombay high court on Monday said
considering the large number of commuters who use skywalks, the BMC must
endeavour to make available all modern facilities in lighting technology
while installing mechanised walkways as well as elevators at both ends of
skywalks for the benefit of senior citizens and persons with disabilities.
The HC disposed of a petition seeking a skywalk in Bandra (East) and
accepted the BMC's submission that restoration work of the skywalk will be
undertaken and completed in 15 months. In future, in all skywalks, the
BMCmust consider the use of technology to make these more sturdy and
beneficial for commuters, ordered the HC bench of Justices Girish Kulkarni
and R N Laddha. The HC noted that the petition by an HC staff-turned-lawyer
K P P Nair, a Bandra resident, had raised an important issued over
non-availability of a foot over bridge connecting the Bandra railway station
on the eastern side towards the Mhada-end leading to the Bandra-Kurla
Complex (BKC). There is only one pavement for commuters to walk from Bandra
railway station towards BKC. This segment faces a junction which has a flow
of heavy traffic as pe-destrians are required to also cross the Western
Express Highway. The pavement is always crowded, said Nair. The HC had last
month observed that commuter safety is paramount and any mishap occurring
due to non-availability of a safe footpath or walkway would amount to a
breach of fundamental rights guaranteed under the Constitution to the
citizens. The HC noted the Central and Western railways as also the Metro
have provided such mechanisms at several railway stations, including
escalators. Asking the BMC to consider it too, the HC said, "Benefits of
modern technology need to be made available to the commuters, to maketheir
commuting life in Mumbai more easier and comfortable. " "We are sure that
such aspects as highlighted by us would be considered and borne in mind by
the MCGM in consultation with all other authorities, so that not only the
proposed skywalk but also all existing skywalks in the city are made ideal,
for their best possible utility, so as to achieve the purpose for which they
are constructed," said the HC. Advocate Karan Bhosale for the BMC said steps
were taken to complete the work of restoration of the skywalk within 15
months of the date of contract. The HC said it was a welcome measure.

oh-so-funny meme that you found? Or how someone with a hearing impairment
may enjoy the stand-up show that just got launched? Well all this and more
is possible and that’s where accessibility and accessible content comes in.
Following some simple rules, one can create and receive content on social
media platforms in their preferred format. The next time you put a
photograph add an ‘alt-text’ describing the photo and a screen reader (an
assistive technology) will read it out for your friend. Simple right? To
bring attention to this and raise importance on how these small steps can
make every conversation accessible.

Saksham’s got a new competition for you. So come, join us, showcase your
skills by creating the most accessible post and video. The competition is
open to all college going students above the age of 18 years. We encourage
students with disabilities including students with visual disabilities to
participate. We'll announce two winners in each category (post and video)
from each group who will get a chance to win a digital certificate and a
cash prize of 2000 INR!
