1. I used to do this with Kurzweil 1000. The quality of speech and speech
rate depends on the TTS that you use to create the mp3 files. I understand
there are some free programmes which can create mp3 files out of text
documents but I do not know of any.

I have not attempted reading audio books so far, mainly because I don't
have an accessible media device that has functionalities like letting
me bookmark multiple audio books.
