Lt Col Dwarakesh, the visually impaired Army officer, achieved remarkable
success at para swimming championships. His journey from shooting to
swimming is inspiring, showcasing the power of spirit in overcoming
challenges.

PUNE: "Spirit can overcome challenges," said Lt Col Dwarakesh, Army's only
visually impaired active-duty officer, after winning gold and silver medals
in the 23rd national para swimming championships. The championship was
conducted by the Paralympic Committee of India between March 29 and 31 in
Gwalior.
Currently posted at the station headquarters in Pune's Khadki, the
35-year-old officer joined the Cadet Training Wing and opted for Corps of
Military Intelligence in 2009.

After a road accident claimed his eyes in 2016, he climbed the Siachen
Glacier in Oct 2021 and won a shooting national medal in Nov 2023.
"Sport has given me a vision for life," he told TOI on Wednesday. "Several
hours of swimming practice for the past few months resulted in a gold in
the 50m (51 seconds) and silver in the 100m (1 minute 50 seconds)
breaststroke event," he added.
The officer has also been practising shooting. Commodore Varun Singh,
secretary of Services (Armed Forces) Sports Control Board, told TOI, "Lt
Col Dwarakesh's achievement is an inspiration. His journey in sports, from
shooting to swimming, is a saga."
