ALLAHABAD: The Allahabad University has taken a novel initiative to
help blind students pursue education without any obstruction. As part
of the endeavour, AU students will record the text books for their
visually handicapped batchmates. And the students, who would be
performing the task, would also earn a remuneration for themselves.
.

.
The initiative has been taken by university's Jawaharlal Nehru centre
for differently abled students under the University Grants
Commission's earn while you learn scheme.
.

Talking to TOI, centre coordinator and AU's only blind teacher,
Sanjeev Kumar said, "Presently, we have three blind students in AU.
But once the text books are recorded, it would help us to attract more
blind students to pursue their education in AU.'' Initially, the
centre will engage 10 students for the purpose who would be recording
the text of the recommended books on the recording system, which would
be done directly on the hard disk of computers.

.

.
Sanjeev added that blind students who are well versed in English
language use the available software wherein the book is scanned and
the computers read the text. But since the software is not available
in Hindi, students from Hindi medium face problems. Once the text
books are recorded, they would be part of the institute's library and
students can use them, centre coordinator added.
.

.
"The requirement is on an urgent basis as final exams will begin from
next month. Within a limited period, we would have to record as much
text as possible,'' he added.

.

.
For selecting students for the purpose, Jawaharlal Nehru centre for
differently abled students will conduct interviews at the office of
dean student welfare on February 10 at 2:30 pm. Students selected for
the task would be paid according to the norms laid down in the UGC
scheme, Kumar informed.
