Thanks for this very plausible suggestion.
We think the reason may well be related to the operating
system, which is Debian Etch. However, there have been no
recent updates or upgrades -- until today (we just updated
for the first time since May 2007).

We will continue our investigation, but Sun Zoom Spark is
*very* busy right now, and does not have much time to
spare.
