My case (Toshiba A105-S2716):
1. acpi=force does not do anything
2. When I first remove (rmmod) the module snd-hda-intel and then try to
shutdown everything goes the way it should be.

It is very simple to check if this is due to acpi by booting kernel with
acpi=off, and check if the problem persists.

Though I have not had any trouble with the laptop for a few days now, the
auto-shutdown problem still exists with 2.6.21 and acpid disabled - guess acpid
is not involved
