Summary|[2.498615] ACPI:|2 seconds delay during boot
   |[Firmware Bug]: BIOS|- Dell XPS 13 9300
   |_OSI(Linux) query ignored |

--- Comment #4 from Zhang Rui (rui.zh...@intel.com) ---
First of all, the "ACPI: [Firmware Bug]: BIOS _OSI(Linux) query ignored" is
probably not the reason of the 2 seconds delay.
Seconds, the 2 seconds delay is probably spent in AML code, which sounds like a
firmware issue to me.

Anyway, I think Len has a 9300 laptop, maybe he can reproduce the issue and
narrow down the problem a little bit.

ACPI: video: Use native backlight on Acer TravelMate 5735Z

Currently, changing the brightness of the internal display of the Acer
TravelMate 5735Z does not work. Pressing the function keys or changing the
slider, GNOME Shell 3.36.2 displays the OSD (five steps), but the
brightness does not change.

The Acer TravelMate 5735Z shipped with Windows 7 and as such does not
trigger our "win8 ready" heuristic for preferring the native backlight
interface.

Still ACPI backlight control doesn't work on this model, where as the
native (intel_video) backlight interface does work by adding
`acpi_backlight=native` or `acpi_backlight=none` to Linux’ command line.

So, add a quirk to force using native backlight control on this model.

The decision of if and when to disable the ACPI video driver is not made by the

This doesn't seem right because Windows just works and doesn't require any
hacks to be 100% functional on this PC. 99% of users will never know how to

But the previous kernel versions, earlier than 4.19.113, still works smoothly
with pci=noacpi, on this laptop, right?

If the previous kernels that used to work still works perfect, then this is
still probably a kernel issue.

This is not an ACPI issue anyway.

No, we should not handle this in ACPI battery driver because it has no idea of
charge_{start,stop}_threshold. We have no such definition in ACPI spec.
userspace is the only place that knows both the current_capacity and
charge_threshold, and then know that the battery is not charging because of
charge threshold.
Checked with Rafael, and we won't do anything in ACPI battery driver. sorry.

[Bug 204807] Hardware monitoring sensor nct6798d doesn't work unless acpi_enforce_resources=lax is enabled

2020-06-29 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=204807

--- Comment #4 from Zhang Rui (rui.zh...@intel.com) ---
Please attach the acpidump output.

Well, TBH, it is probably that there is no way to fix this.
The root cause is that ACPI claims some resources that will possibly be used by
the ACPI AML code, but the native nct6775 driver also requests the same piece
of resource.

You mean vanilla 4.15 kernel, right?

Does the problem still exist in latest upstream kernel?
If yes, please run git bisect to find out the offending commit which introduces
the problem.

does the problem still exists in latest upstream kernel?

This problem looks tricky and I have no idea what could cause the problem.
BTW, a simple way to confirm your bisect result is to
1. git checkout b7ccc7f8c643de0b71cd2da3245d0c27038a8dd7 and confirm if
poweroff is broken
2. git checkout b7ccc7f8c643de0b71cd2da3245d0c27038a8dd7~ and confirm if
poweroff is working

--- Comment #33 from Zhang Rui (rui.zh...@intel.com) ---
So we have two problems here.
One is the ACPI errors.
Another one is a kernel regression which breaks backlight control.

For the second one, please report a bug to the graphics experts.

For the first one, I'd prefer to close it as it seems harmless (according to
comment #30), and they're caused by buggy AML code IMO (according to comment
#32).
