TRUNCATE TABLE table
will be faster, especially for big tables. But this is going OT :-)

Found this interesting article about Google's clustering File System. Don't
worry, it isn't going to replace NTFS but it is an interesting approach to
cheap massive storage for clusters and it has Google in the title.
Maybe it will jog the MS Executives

Correct me if I'm over simplifying things here…but doesn't 2047GB = 1.99TB (not 2.47TB) since 1024GB = 1TB…right?

I can think of 2 things that may help - 1 is the
netlogon log - and 2 is a network sniff from the client during the
"nltest /sc_query:domain"
The netlogon log may simply show the denieds but -
it may shows something else which may be useful as well.

I would do that if I was the DBA, however I am not and plan on sticking around
with my current employer for at least a few years, and hopefully till I reach
retirement age.

Our AD (NTDS.dit) is at 1.7GB (approx. 250,000 users).
Should an offline defrag be performed at a regular interval?
Some articles I read only say it is only worthwhile if you are running low on space. We have plenty of drive space and RAM.
At what point should the AD be moved to 64 bit?
Hi,
I was curious to watch some LDAP referral traces
(OK, so it's been a quiet day) and am seeing some results I don't understand
among different tools. The queries are issued from within a child domain
to a DC in that same domain, searching for an object in another child
domain (root +
Hello Joshua,
Id look at the whitespace to determine when to offline
defrag a DC. You can enable the associated event which will tell you the amount
of whitespace by setting the registry key
HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\NTDS\Diagnostics\6 Garbage Collection to
1 instead of 0
We also made GPT available on x86 with Windows Server 2003 SP1
however it is still not supported for shared disks.
Thanks,

What is the importance of the gc._msdcs.mycompany.com A records?

I wasn't aware that this was a change in SP1, but it sounds
as if StrictNameChecking is enabled on your server after you've added SP1
(http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;281308)
You ca disable it in general by configuring the
DisableStrictNameChecking reg-key as the KB
1.7GB for 250.000 users is pretty small already - I guess
you don't use Exchange for messaging or use extremely few attributes of your
objects in AD. With the steps outlined by Ulf you should get a fair idea
on how much whitespace you currently have, however, you shouldn't expect to have
Sounds like hes probably just not populating many attributes. Ive
got double that DIT size at a client with half the number of users easily. Ive
also never had a reason to defrag a dit when I can just dcpromo down/up if I
think it will fix a database issue.
Thanks,
