Hi Jonathan,

We have got a few records for September and even some as late as
October. I guess it all depends on the weather conditions and if the
female has still not been fertilised there's no reason for her not to
keep trying as long as the weather holds out long enough for the male to
be able to fly!

Also, if you think you have seen a glow-worm at another time of the year
it may be that you have seen a glow-worm larva as they glow too, albeit
a dull pulsing glow which is best seen on a dark moonless night.

It would be worth your while going back to Selham to check for
glow-worms in the next couple of weeks as this may confirm your
suspicions. Let us know how you get on!
