For what it is worth, we are at 3.7.3 on an OS/390 server. The automatic delete of the the backupsets when their retention period is exceeded does not happen. But a DELETE BACKUPSET command did work to delete the backupset from the VOLHIST and allow the tape to be scratched.

Well further digging and i disovered one of the two drives marked as UnAvailable in TSM. I removed the library cartridge and the lights on the front of the drive are blinking indicating a fault condition. Rebooting the drive and restarting TSM, TSM polls the drive then marks it UnAvailable. I
