The typical cause is the tapes were not labeled. You checked them in, but you should have done a LABEL LIBVOLUME .. CHECKIN=Scratch. Just check them back out and do the LABEL command. This is the normal action TSM takes to get a bad tape marked for no reuse when it is not labeled. Paul D.

Over extended log

Ok I have a serious problem. My log is full and I'm at the maximum as far as size goes. When the server starts I get a ANR7837S Internal Error LOGSEG871 detected. Does anyone know how to get around this. The tsm server is running but unacessable via the command interface... Tia Mark Remeta

Remember that each version of every file you keep take something like 600 bytes in your database. You are effectively saying you have up to 1830 versions of every file (5 years times 366 days per year). Times say 5000 files per system, and 600 bytes per version, is about 5.2 gig of database space

Novell restore

I have a Novell server that the file ownership rights/ attributes have been lost, however the files are still in place. Is there a way to just restore the files attribute without restoring the file or the directories?

...I have just answered my own question. If you ever permit a disk storage pool to fill up, you will then have as many Filling tapes in its corresponding tape storage pool as you have tape drives. These will gradually be filled up and absorbed, until next time the disk storage pool fills up.
