Well. Got to give credit where credit is due. Absolutely fantastic

Not for IBM, if they were IBM's competitors! ;-)

Guys,
I'm probably missing something quite obvious or fundamental here, so
forgive if this sounds like a silly question...
We're limited to quite a small disk storage pool on one of our NT TSM

Is this a Windows or AIX TSM server?
If it is windows has the server been rebooted and remapped the drives. If
it is AIX have you checked the drive status in smitty to see if the server
can communicate with them. you can use either NTUTIL in Windows or
TAPEUTIL in AIX to test communicating with

We had similar problems with the 5.1.0.1 version of the client. An upgrade

We have had this problem and TSM support recommended adding the
MEMORYEFFICIENTBACKUP=yes parameter in the DSM.OPT file. This seems to have
fixed the problem.

So I would check the server Activity Log, beginning on the day the problem first

At our site, we run our TSM servers with a 7 day activity log retention.
However, we run our TSM servers on AIX and when we start them up we use the nohup

nohup.out file.
The downside to doing it

Hi Neil,
I agree with
Do you run any other backup products on the problem machine besides TSM?
(ntbackup, veritas, arcserve, or ?)
Are you backing up the problem machine via TSM scheduler service? If so,
try stopping *all* TSM client services (schedulers, client acceptors,
remote client agents) and wait about 15 -
I agree with the low highmig number suggestion, say highmig=20 lowmig=10.
Write a script that does a q stg diskpool every 5 minutes or so to watch
how fast it's growing. If you can't migrate off faster than your clients
are backing up, then you have no choice except to get more disk. I don't
I am looking at the mixed device and media support for SCSI libraries.

I agree with Richard, but instead of q actlog dumps, we use the dsmulog

If simple reporting is all you're looking for, if you use Microsoft

connection. Both Excel and Access offer extensive data filtering and

That's what we do and
I've been given an LTO tape that is supposedly a TSM DB backup. The external
barcode label reads SU3689L1, which I assume is also the volume name as TSM
would see it. My intention is to recover the TSM database by doing a dsmserv
restore db. I do not have the volume history file or anything else
Quick answer to part of this -- the tsm volser doesn't include the 'L1' so
you would use vol=SU3689 in the restoredb process. I'm not sure about
doing a 'dsmserv display dbbackupvolume' -- never tried it.
