I'm kinda new to TSM NetApp and I'm wondering what the advantages of
doing Qtree level backups are?
I do a NDMP backup of the filers complete which still allows me restore
right down to specific files.

It's a TSM issue.
In TSM, update the drive using the serial=autodetect option. You can also
enter the serial number of the new drive as an argument to that option.

Last time I had this I deleted the path and the drive in tTSM and added
it again. (new drive= new serial)
As far as I know it is not possible to update the serial of a drive.
(You can update the serial of a library.)

Are you getting a dialogue box that asks for a username/password? If so,
try using your TSM administrative username and password in that box - that
should work. If so, the problem is the password on the node's
administrative account, which you can fix on the server side using the admin

If it's offline, bring it online and try again. Otherwise you may have to

We have some very large volumes (1TB+) that have 10s of millions
of files. If we were to back them up using NDMP at the volume level, it
would take a long time and create a HUGE table of contents. TOCs for
NDMP are not kept in the database, but in a special disk pool. When
TSM used to only be able to do NDMP at an image level, but in
the recent releases, it creates a Table of Contents that allows you to
do file level restores using TSM. That feature, and the ability to do
NDMP at the q-tree level are the 2 features that we required before we
would try to use

My first question is are you licensed for the Extended Edition of TSM,
because it includes DRM support which will make your life much easier
when it comes to managing off site tapes and doing DR testing. In
particular you would be using move drmedia commands instead of move
media commands.
Backupsets are not considered DRMEDIA by DRM. You can't use MOVE MEDIA on them
either because they do not belong to a storage pool.
You would have to write your own scripts to look for the backupset tapes and
then update the volhistory record for that tape with a
LOCATION= parameter.

stop and net start of the TSM service that I had forgotten about.
The reason we set that up was to do snapshots of the TSM db copy volumes
that reside on a netapp filer.
