Hi TSM-ers!
In one of my virtual libraries I found 4 tapes which were unavailable. I
updated them to read-only and issued a move data for them. This failed due to
the following error:

I just did the install last week and didn't see any issues with the
install script or memory dumps. What version of AIX are you running? I'm
on 6.1 TL 7 SP 6 (I updated from TL 7 SP 4 in order to do the TSM 7.1
install.)
I am seeing abysmal speeds during backup db commands (about half the
We've been using TSM for VE for about a year now and while it's been great
for onsite restores, our recent DR test was troubling. We've been using
the IFINCR strategy and while I was expecting restores from tape to be
slow, I wasn't expecting restores to drag into the 5-6 hour range for a

Use the RESTORE VOLUME command to move the data from your copy pool to a new
volume. That will leave the old volume with status DESTORYED. At that point
you should be able to do a DELETE VOLUME and then the relabel.
If you don't have a copy pool, a DELETE VOLUME xxx DISCARDDATA will
Is your PRIMARY VMCTL storage pool on FILE type disk? Can you create a
corresponding FILE storage pool at DR and do a RESTORE STGPOOL prior to
starting the VME restores?

Has anyone every used a VM system for their TSM backup solution?
If so, are there any pros?
I would also like to hear the cons.

Yes, the VMCTL data is stored in its own stgpool with a FILE devc and we
could request additional disk for the test to use for the RESTORE STG
command. Would that be faster than restoring individual VM's? Should I
still look at collocating the VMCTL data on a single tape?

We haven't taken the plunge yet, but I've been looking at this option for
smaller remote sites that only have VMWare. I'd be leery of doing
deduplication on a VM because of the resources required, but other than
that I don't see a reason why a VM would pose any issues. This assumes,
of course,
I don't know how the VMCTL metadata is used. But I see multiple files in the
vmctl storage pool for a given VM which leads me to believe that TSM will need
to read more than one of those metadata entries for a given VM restore. If
that is true, I am guessing it would be a significant benefit
The 1st thing I'd do is get a call logged with your vtl vendor. You need
to find out if this corruption is more widespread.

Are there any other events for the drive or tape in the log?
Does the library need to be audited? Is the correct tape being mounted?
Does the VTL software show any issues with the tape?
Does the OS show anything?
Do all of the tapes have a similar last write date and time?

We have a DR Windows TSM server that is a VM. We have used it a few times in
testing, no real work. It has worked without issue.
I do not think you can use any FC devices with VMWare. We use file storage on
a DD.
