We had similar issues sometime ago now, when we had non IBM
carts in our library and the picker drive was an LTO1 path.
We have since removed all non IBM carts especially EMTEC and moved the
picker drive to a LTO2 drive.
Touch would it has been stable.

Thanks for your note. The tape drive wasn't the library control
path. Since we have two control paths, and the ALT path turned on in
the AIX driver, I would hope that wouldn't be a problem anyway.
But our Atape drivers are about a year old. It would not hurt
to update
Was the single tape drive that had an error your library control path?
Is Atape up to date?
What OS is the TSM server running?
Are there any errors in the errpt / error log / syslog, etc?
