True, but other tools should not have access to the tapes. If they do,
then you've got a much larger data integrity problem to solve. Reading
beyond the end-of-tape mark is not possible when the only program able
to access the tape is the TSM server. If there is a way to run these
other tools

Tell this to the intruder :) and they're mostly from internal staff.

From searching the archives, it seems that TSM does not have a tape erasure
ability, but must be done outside of TSM. I understand TSM, and that there
is little to no need to erase a tape, but of course, management doesn't
always understand or believe that. Has anyone solved this problem, made

Just to clarify, data shredding is available for random access disk
pools only, not for sequential disk or tape.

Yes, there are reasons. While you're reusing the tape, there is still old
data on the unused part of the tape that can be read with other tools.

Is there a way to erase tapes via TSM? (Or AIX?)
We have changed servers and tape format (from TSM4.1, AIX 4.something and
a 3575 library) and I am on a quest to scrub the old tapes so we can try
to sell them instead of having to destroy them.

You could use tctl erase. This writes zeroes to the tape.
