You are right. Those files are not there anymore so the client sends this

info to server and they are expired according to files' policy settings,

They are being expired. Depends on your retention policies as to how
long this file will remain inactive before it is actually deleted from TSM.

The Sent, I believe means that the info has ben sent. Look at the
timestamp. All this happens in one second. Could you send 3 GB in
one second? The size is the size of the last file of this name that was
deleted, is the way I think it works.

Re: Solaris TSM Server Performance

2002-05-09 Thread Bern Ruelas

Hi Brenda,

There are several commands we used to set this up:

DEFINE DBVOLUME /dev/rdsk/c2t0d0s4 FORMATSIZE=24000 WAIT=NO
DEFINE LOGVOLUME /dev/rdsk/c1t0d1s4 FORMANTSIZE=1 WAIT=NO

They format in about a minute and we are getting an average of
about 50-60 GB/hr transfer rate. On Exchange tests we ran an
average of 80 GB/hr to back up and 39 GB/hr to restore the full
database. Remember that using raw volumes
is quick but it can EASILY get you into trouble. Make *very* sure
you have this mapped out and know *exactly* which slices you are
using and where.

Hello Jozef,

I just got thru doing something like this with a similar setup:
we use Emulex LP8000 cards for the HBA's onto an IBM 3584 with LTO drives
and a Mcdata switch. There are 4 things that need to be done or it won't
work:
0. Ensure that you've moved the /kernel/drv/st.conf somewhere else. Solaris
will try and grab your scsi tape devices otherwise.
1. Make sure your fabric is set up correctly and that at boot up
(ck the /var/adm/messages files) you see your IBMtape device drivers and
HBA acquired targets. Here's a clip of what I'm talking about:

May 3 18:04:35 bst7-1 unix: IBMtape254 at lpfc1:
May 3 18:04:35 bst7-1 unix: IBMtape178 at lpfc1:

May 3 18:04:35 bst7-1 unix: NOTICE: lpfc1: Acquired FCP/SCSI Target 9 LUN 3

3. Next check that your /usr/kernel/drv/IBMtape.conf file has the requisite
objects not #'d out. We typically leave all 16 instances open.

 Hi all,

Just wanted to sanity check my disk storage pool layout I'm planning.

 AIX 4.3.3
 Server H80
2 x D40 SSA drawers, two loops over two SSA 160 adapters
 32 x 9Gb SSA disks
Max nodes backing up at any one time is approx 6

I don't want to mirror the volumes

32 x 9Gb logical volumes, each logical volume on one SSA disk. These lvs
will then translate into 32 disk storage pool volumes. This way if I have a
disk failure I only lose one disk pool volume.

Anyone got any ideas what kind of read/write performance I should expect to
 see from this config?

 Any other options considered.

Re: Help Understanding Mgmt classes

2002-05-09 Thread Diana Noble

Thank you Don and Zlatko for all the information on management classes. It
really helped. I know what we are doing is against the TSM backup ideology.
The system was originally setup to do AFS backups only, which doesn't really
use the management class. The type of backup and it's retention is handled
through AFS. Now we have another group who wishes to use our TSM system for
their Win2k backups. We currently do not do copypools as our resources are
limited and we didn't need them for the type of data we back up under AFS. We
save a week old copy of the backups offsite and that was fine for us. The
other users who are now testing their backups on our TSM server are taking
fulls once a week for purpose of offsite storage. We intend on changing this
once they have decided whether they are going to continue to use the TSM server
for backups. They don't care for the copypool backup idea and prefer a
snapshot taken once a month by using instant archive. We are still in
discussions with them on what their requirements are and how we want to
accomplish them and how much additional hardware will be required to meet their
requirements.

Thanks again for all your help.

Diana

Quoting Zlatko Krastev [EMAIL PROTECTED]:

 Diana,

The only major flaw I see is your intention to use absolute. This is
against the TSM backup ideology. I am interested what is the business
 reason to go this way.
The rest is as designed but I personally am not happy with your design.
If you change default class (be it through setting another one as default
or by activating another policy set), on next backup all files will be
re-bound to that class. But if in the new policyset you set retextra=4 on
next expiration 26 versions would be deleted. Having two mgmt classes
differing only by mode will not give you two times 30 versions. The number
of versions kept will be min(30,30) - again 30.
Do not overcomplicate your policy. Create one class (or more) and use it.
If you still want to have full backup on Sundays - I would use selective
backup in Sunday's schedule and leave policy/classes unchanged. Again - is
there actual need to resend all the data over the LAN? It is on the server
already. Lets manage it better. If you can define the requirements in
*business* terms only and prevent full/incremental/differential ideology
to predefine the solution - this list can help you.
TSM is very different from other backup products. And sometimes its
traditional usage looks to me as driving a jet fighter on a highway with
100 km/h instead of flying with 1500 km/h over shorter route.

 Subject:Help Understanding Mgmt classes

 Hi All -

I believe I have my management classes all defined with a major flaw. We
do scheduled modified backups during the week and scheduled absolute
backups on Sundays. I have two management classes defined. Both have the
same retentions coded but one has absolute for the copy mode and one has
modified coded. I have a script that swaps the default management class
on Sundays. After rereading the manual and looking at the archives of
 this
list, it seems there's no guarantee that the backup will use the default
Management class. Also, if I've specified to keep 30 versions of the data
in both management classes, does that mean I'm going to retain 30 versions
from the absolute and 30 versions of the modified? I really want 30
 versions all together.

My thought is to create multiply policy sets, and activate the policy set
that contains only the management class I want. I would then specify a
retention of 4 versions for my policy set that contains the management
class for absolute. This won't delete any of my 30 versions that were
saved using the policy set that contains the modified management class,
will it? Does this make sense, or am I still way off here?

OK, so v4.2.2.1 is bad. I'm still mulling over whether revert back

Re: comments on disk storage plan

2002-05-09 Thread Gerald Wichmann

With only 6 nodes pushing data to the TSM server at a time, what kind of
throughput are you expecting the TSM server to have to handle (is the
network going to limit throughput? How much data do you expect the nodes
themselves to push?) I.e. do you really think with that many disks in your
disk pool you're going to see some discernable difference between jfs and
raw logical volumes? You'll see terrific performance regardless of which
route you go but you need to leverage the advantage of having so many
disks...

Keep in mind how TSM uses disk storage pool volumes. In your below scenario
you suggest having 32 disk pool volumes and yet you also mention only appox
6 nodes will be backing up at once. Assuming only 1 thread per node, you'll
only be accessing 6 of those 32 disk volumes at any one time. The other's
will sit idle while each node essentially backs up to only 1 disk at a time.
You wouldn't be leveraging the advantage of having so many disks..

Using striping or even RAID-5 makes much more sense. E.g. you could do as
Rich mentioned below. Or perhaps 6 RAID-5 arrays of 5 disks each with 2 hot
spares? Certainly makes admining easier since you'll never lose data. You're
going to have to take all these variables into consideration. How is TSM
going to hit those volumes you create? How is AIX going to write to the
disks given the configuration you're considering? How are the SSA adapters
and pathways going to handle the given configuration?

Oh, I guess it's just my paranoid mind at work again, but DELETE DBVOL
scares me. I'm using it to migrate the TSM Database from old disks to
new, faster disks.

So, I attached the new dbvol and its mirror, fiddled with EXTEND DB and
REDUCE DB to make it right, and did DELETE DBVOL on the old mirror. Then
I did DELETE DBVOL on the old primary copy.

Oops! Now I'm really exposed! There is only one copy of the old database
volume, while this rather lengthly copying process proceeds.

Is there any way to do a DELETE DBVOL in a mirrored way - that is delete
all mirrored copies of a DBVOL at once, so that if a disk crashes in the
middle of it, I will not lose my Database? That's the whole point of
Database mirroring, isn't it?

I'm starting to think AIX JFS mirroring might have some advantages over
TSM Database/Log mirroring.

3.7 - 4.2.1 Server Upgrade Incompatibility

2002-05-09 Thread Roger Deschner

Nothing else changed. I promise. We upgraded the server from ADSM V3.1.7
to TSM V4.2.1.9, and I am facing a seemingly trivial, but for us
serious, UPWARD INCOMPATIBILITY.

Users running the Scheduler Client Version 4 started receiving an extra
prompt for userid when they started the scheduler client. Then they got
the customary Password prompt as a second prompt.

WITH SERVER ADSM 3.1:

 C:\Program Files\Tivoli\TSM\baclientdsmc schedule
 Tivoli Storage Manager
Command Line Backup Client Interface - Version 4, Release 2, Level 1.0
 (C) Copyright IBM Corporation, 1990, 2001, All Rights Reserved.

Querying server for next scheduled event.
 Node Name: NODE.NAME
Please enter password for node NODE.NAME:

...and the user types their password and the scheduler starts.

WITH SERVER TSM 4.2:

 C:\Program Files\Tivoli\TSM\baclientdsmc schedule
 Tivoli Storage Manager
Command Line Backup Client Interface - Version 4, Release 2, Level 1.0
 (C) Copyright IBM Corporation, 1990, 2001, All Rights Reserved.

Querying server for next scheduled event.
 Node Name: NODE.NAME
Please enter your user id NODE.NAME:

...at this point, the user has to press Enter. There is nothing relevant
to enter here on a Windows client. I'm getting complaints from users
about this. Many users, out of habit, type their password at this point,
which appears in clear text on their screens, so I'm also getting calls
complaining that this represents a security exposure.

Please enter password for user id NODE.NAME:

...then the password is entered and they continue as usual.

The question is, how do we skip that first pointless prompt for Userid,
and go straight to the Password prompt? And, what are you allowed or
supposed to enter at this userid prompt, anyway? The node name? The
Windows user name?

Well, I held these comments for several days while I asked Tivoli about
this. The only response I got was That's the way it works now. with a
suggestion that I go and modify each client user's machine to
PASSWORDACCESS GENERATE. That's nice, but with bazillions of nodes in
every department on campus, that will take until sometime in the year
2004, especially with the handholding it will take to get PASSWORDACCESS
GENERATE going for computer illiterate users.

I still need to circumvent this, at the server level. (My phone is
ringing!) Backing out to the old server version is not an option. Users
still running Client Version 3 are being advised of this issue before
they consider upgrading.

Del,

Thanks for your help. I created a new node and created a new schedule that
does a full selective backup. But then, I realized that I am still using
the same management class with the normal retention period of my
incrementals. Does this mean my selective backups are of no use since they
just get expired. Do I need to create another Management Class, if yes,
would I also need to create a backup copy group? Or can I just create/copy
another dsm.opt file which refers to the new
management class and then refer to the new dsm.opt file in the dominc.cmd
script.

Thanks

Rodolfo,

TDP for Domino does not support archive.
Do you mean monthly backups outside of the normal

ways to do this. Some of the customers I have talked to
set up a second NODENAME (like DOMSERV99.MONTHLY) and
run a full selective backup using that NODENAME.

IMO, I think this is a moot issue. The 1st thing 'delete dbvol' does is
move any db data from the subject dbvol (both mirror-halves, because they are still
sync'd) to another dbvol - but not to the other
mirror-half. Both of the mirror-halves be empty when the 1st 'delete
dbvol' completes. The primary is defined, but is empty and won't really
be part of the DB until another 'extend db' has been performed.

Re: Disaster Recovery Site

2002-05-09 Thread Zlatko Krastev

T1 simply is not enough. Just some math:
1.536 MB/s * 3600 sec/h = 5529.6 MB/h (5.4 GB/h)
5.4 GB/h * 24h/day = 129.6 GB/day
129.6 GB/day * 7 days/week = 907.2 GB/week
Having 90 GB daily change you are very very close to the limit - for real
disaster recovery you will need also TSM DB backup/snapshot at DR site and
you did not pointed how big is DB. And for sure there is no enough
throughput for weekend's SAP DB (even being one and the only).
So you have to reconsider something.

Subject:Disaster Recovery Site

Hi,

I am currently putting together a plan to make one of our sites a disaster
recovery site. I have it visualized how I would like to do it, but I
thought I would run it past you more experienced TSM'ers in hopes you
might
catch my flaws or give me some better advise. Here are the details:

Colorado

NSM Server -- AIX 4.3.3, TSM 4.1.3
We will be changing to from a NSM server to a TSM server V5.1 in the
  near future.
LTO 3584
2 Domains:
DM1 - 46 Servers
SAP - 19 Servers
Clients run the gamout from V3.7.2.19 to V4.2.1.32
Average 90 gig on weekdays and 1.5 TB on weekends (due to SAP database)

New Jersey Site 1

2 Domains:
DM1 (this is part of the DM1 in Colorado) - 2 Servers
LAB - 1 Server and 3 Workstations
Both Domains combined have 20 gig total data
Using Backup Exec with DLT drives attached to servers

New Jersey Site 2

1 Domain:
DM1 (this is part of the DM1 in Colorado) - 2 Servers
17 gig total data
Using Backup Exec with DLT drives attached to servers

Here is what I would like to do:

Put a TSM Server and LTO 3583 in New Jersey Site 1 to backup both New
   Jersey sites.
We would do this with a T1 that is dedicated to only the backups.
The TSM server would be a W2K server.
Use the New Jersey Site 1 as a disaster recovery site for Colorado and
   vise versa.
I would backup the tapepool in Colorado to a special Copypool
 (i.e. COLOcopypool) in New Jersey
I would backup the tapepool in New Jersey to a special Copypool
 (i.e. NJcopypool) in Colorado.
We have two option to get the data back and forth (my LAN WAN
person is investigating this for me):
Dedicated line between the two sites
A T1 (dedicated ot just backups) going through a frame.

Here are my questions:

Since they will be Disaster Recovery sites for each other, does the TSM
server need to be the same operating system?
Would the backup tapepool to copypool be the best way to do this?
Has anyone else setup a system like this and how did you do it?
Also has anyone had to provide an ROI for TSM? I can think of some
basic things like saving on headcount (but I have been a one person
team
for years so that wont fly).

Sorry this email is so long. Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

Re: dsmc via cmdline

2002-05-09 Thread Gerald Wichmann

No.. normally when you first install the client on linux, even with
passwordaccess generate you must initially run dsmc and perform a query or
something such that it asks for your login and password. Once done, it saves
the password in an encrypted file and won't ask you again in the future.

I'm trying to automate the install and start the dsmc process without having
to have some user start it once to set the password. Isn't there a way to
run dsmc and specify the password from the commandline e.g. if you have a
ksh/perl script that calls dsmc in it such that you can specify the password
as an argument to perform an operation? E.g. I want a script to do a dsmc
I but I also don't want my client to be in passwordaccess generate mode.

With dsmadmc you can specify a login and password as argument (e.g. dsmadmc
-id=admin -pa=admin 'q stg').. I want to do something similar with dsmc..

Show Libr output

2002-05-09 Thread Mike Crawford

In investigating a tape drive problem, I found the output from the Show Libr
command to be interesting, specifically the type=8, mod=## fields:

RMT2 (/dev/rmt2):
  type=8, mod=48, busy=1, online=1,
  polled=0, available=1, createPending=0
  priorReadFailed=0, priorWriteFailed=0
  priorLocateFailed=0, update=0, checking=0,
  offline time/date: 00:00:00 1900/00/00
  Log sense counters last dismount:
349X-specific fields:
  devNo=2527744, isScsi=1
  last dismounted volume
RMT0 (/dev/rmt0):
  type=8, mod=17, busy=1, online=1,
  polled=0, available=1, createPending=0
  priorReadFailed=0, priorWriteFailed=0
  priorLocateFailed=0, update=0, checking=0,
  offline time/date: 00:00:00 1900/00/00
  Log sense counters last dismount:
349X-specific fields:
  devNo=2523440, isScsi=1
  last dismounted volume

All five drives are 3590E1A's, four drives show type=8, mod=17, but RMT2 shows
something different. This is the drive we are having problems with.

Does anyone know what these fields mean, and what values mean what, under AIX
4.3.1?

Thanks,
Mike

Subject: Re: gzip for AIX 4.3, a suggestion to reduce the pain

Hi All:

I downloaded gzip yesterday. After uncompressing and untarring the
gzip-1.2.4.tar.Z
file I simply did:

1) ./configure
2) make
3) modified my PATH

and everything worked like a charm. This assumes you have a compiler.

Re: Mirrored DELETE DBVOL, LOGVOL?

2002-05-09 Thread Zlatko Krastev

You can delete (copy) dbvol even without reducing the DB and having it
almost full. If the dbvol to be deleted is a mirror copy TSM LVM breaks
the mirror (no any data move) and just deletes volume entry.
Actual data move happens when you move primary/last mirror copy of the
dbvol in question. And TSM LVM does not forbid you to have one volume with
two (or even three) mirror copies and another one without any redundancy.
It is just the same as AIX LVM - you can have one LV with mirrors and
another without.

IMO, I think this is a moot issue. The 1st thing 'delete dbvol' does is
move any db data from the subject dbvol (both mirror-halves, because they
are still sync'd) to another dbvol - but not to the other
mirror-half. Both of the mirror-halves be empty when the 1st 'delete
dbvol' completes. The primary is defined, but is empty and won't really
be part of the DB until another 'extend db' has been performed.

Subject:Mirrored DELETE DBVOL, LOGVOL?

Fwd: how can I setup a admin account which only allow three commands

2002-05-09 Thread Eduardo Martinez

Well,

I havent seen this is possible.
But Im thinking if you use make a shell script, and executing only
those three commands:

dsmadmc -id=user -pa=password q req
dsmadmc -id=user -pa=password checki vol
dsmadmc -id=user -pa=password checko vol

Or maybe you can put each of this on a script of its own.
So your operator only has to do is to type the name of the shell you
gave him:

req.sh
checki.sh
checko.sh

It is just a tip...

 Dear all,

 Question 1:
I need setup a admin account which only allow our new operator to run
 only
 three commands:

However, the lowerest authority with the above commands must be used.

 Any comments will be appreciated

Re: how can I setup a admin account which only allow three comman ds

2002-05-09 Thread Seay, Paul

To my knowledge this is the only way it is possible. I have done some
elaborate similar things. The best thing is to do make the script
executable by a group and not readable because the userid and password will
be in there. I have found however that dsmadmc requires root access because
of the ShMem access so we use sudo. That secures it even further because
the person can be authorized only to execute the specific script. I am sure
there are ways around the root access requirement for the shared memory.

TSM Restore Problem on Netware 5.1

2002-05-09 Thread Jason J. Kim

Hi, All

Recently I hava a restoration problem.
TSM 3.7 (Server on AIX)
TSM 4.2.1 (Client)
Netware 5.1 SP3

I believed TSM modules are all updated.

Problem: Retrieve from Archive is OK but restore is not because of file write error.

Q1: Why retrieve is OK but restore is not?
Q2: TSM problem or Netware problem?
Q3: What kinds of permissions and trustees required for the id to backup?
Q4: Mechanism of retrieve from archive vs. restore from backup

Need your help asap!

Thanks in advance.
