Versions data deleted

2007-06-13 Thread Stefan Holzwarth
Short question, because I'm not shure:

Does versions data deleted=0 mean:

If file is deleted its backup version is also immediately deleted during
next backup/expiration -
despite the duration-setting for retain only backup version?

Kind regards

Yes. The zero means keep no versions.
In retention specifications, the most severe is the one which prevails.

Storage Pool Parameter: Migration Delay question

2007-06-13 Thread Joni Moyer
Hi Everyone,

I would like to have 30 days of data retained within the cdlb_aix (onsite
cdl) storage pool before it gets migrated to the tape_aix pool (onsite
physical tape). I have defined the migration delay parameter to be 30 and
I just want to make sure that I understand what I have defined. Will the
data remain in cdlb_aix for 30 days unless the pool hits its 90% full
mark? And do I have to run a migration job to move the data from cdlb_aix
to tape_aix? Or will it automatically move to cdlb_aix after 30 days?

ANR8355E-I/O error has brought the tape from Read Write to Unavailable

2007-06-13 Thread zareyna salim
Hi all,

I encountered an error on the tape while doing a TDP for Exchange backup.

The error was ANR 8355E I/O error reading label for volume A000122.

After the unsuccessful backup finished, some of the tapes that were mount
during the backup has changed from readwrite to unavailable.

I have update all the unavailable tape to read write status and run the back
up but still I encountered the ANR8355E error and the tapes again change the
status to unavailable.

This issue happened last 3 days, when I received an intermittent
unsuccessful backup of TDP for Exchange due to error ANS1315E (RC15)
Unexpected Retry request. It has brought me to check the volume for the
storage pool and found that some of tapes were in unavailable and read

Basically. The server counts the number of days from the day that
the file was stored in the storage pool or was last retrieved by a
client, whichever is more recent. The NORETRIEVEDATE server option
can be used to factor out the last retrieved date.

And do I have to run a migration job to move the data from cdlb_aix
to tape_aix? Or will it automatically move to cdlb_aix after 30 days?

Automatic migration will occur if space is needed, per the high
migration threshold; but you can initiate migration as you see fit,
as in preventing congestion and delays during daily client backups,
which is the worst time for a migration.

And, by all means, assure that your overall processing can afford a
30 day MIGDelay storage pool commitment.

Experienced causes of that message are in http://people.bu.edu/rbs/
ADSM.QuickFacts .
You don't say whether you labeled the tapes, via 'LABEl LIBVolume' or
the dsmlabel command or per the AUTOLabel library definition. That's
the most common missing ingredient. A shared library where the non-
TSM sharer has overwritten the TSM tape is worse.

Doing a HELP 8355 from the TSM admin command line gives a suggestion that the
PATH statements do not correctly point to the right
drive(s). Possibly the DEVICE= specified in the PATH isn't the correct DRIVE of
the ELEMENT= you specified. Most libraries and TSM
today support the ELEMENT=AUTODETECT for the DEFINE DRIVE command. Then the

Re: Fw: How to Incorporate a CDL into TSM environment?

2007-06-13 Thread Johnson, Milton
The VTL is a Sepaton S2100-ES and yes it is disk only.

I don't see the benefit that a tape backed system would bring, how
does that really differ from a physical tape ATL with TSM providing a
DISKPOOL front end?

Fewer tape-head-hours: I understand your confusion, there was no way
to reduce the required tape-head-hours, but with a VTL if I need 30
physical tape drives then I configure the VTL as having 45 virtual
drives, more than enough. There is no price difference for configuring
my VTL as having 1 tape drive or 64 tape drives.

Off topic:
Configuration Based Pricing: I pray Sepaton will not start, and other
vendors will not continue, a pricing scheme based up how you configure
the software you PURCHASED. What's next, you have to may extra to your
OS vendor for each file system you create?

money, more than our VTL costs.

I'm interested in the details on this. The VTL is disk-only, or is it
tape backed? I'm confused about how you need fewer tape-head-hours when
you virtualize processes.

Adding Archiving to the Mix?

2007-06-13 Thread Nick Laflamme

(Apologies if I've asked this before; I can't find any trace of an
answer, let alone that I sent the question, although I've thought of
asking in the past.)

We may have new requirements from a user that are a better match for
TSM's archival functions than its backup functions. Can anyone point me
to Redpieces or talks from conferences that would guide a TSM shop
already fluent in backup (and restoration) operations as we start to
implement archives? I'm piecing together hints and clues from sources
like Richard's ADSM Quickfacts, but if there's a checklist or cookbook,
I'd be happy to stand upon the shoulders of others.

And, if not, well, I guess I have a topic for the next time I get an
urge to speak at a user group.

Thanks,
Nick

dsmcad for TDPO

2007-06-13 Thread goc

hi all,

i'm trying to set up schedulers for TDPO nodes on AIX using DSMCAD ,

the problem is that (at least i think so) if i want to use /api/bin64
directory as configuration path with dsm.sys and separated
dsm_INSTANCE_tdpo.opt files
i have to set up DSM_CONFIG=/usr/tivoli/tsm/client/api/bin64 and
DSM_DIR=/usr/tivoli/tsm/client/api/bin64/ as env. variables, and only
then dsmcad starts okay,

another thing is what about PASSWORDACCESS Prompt for TDPO ? if i want
to use dsmcad the PASSWORDACCESS has to be generate, right ? otherwise
i'm getting ANS2050E TSM needs to prompt for the password but cannot
prompt because the process is running in the backgroud

is there any other solution except (i guess) to move all
dsm_INSTANCE_tdpo.opt files into $DSM_HOME /ba/bin , and merge
dsm.sys from /api/bin64 into .../ba/bin/dsm.sys

i guess this will work, but this PASSWORDACCESS generate/prompt really
really puzzles me, how to set it up ...

thanks for any tip or even better ... a solution :-)

Keep thinking about the scheduler and the TDP clear and separate...
dsmcad is part of the Backup-Archive client, and is unrelated to the
API, which is the basis of TDP operation. dsmcad runs 'dsmc
schedule' as a child process, and dsmc is part of B/A. The B/A
client has a conventional directory for its options files; the API
has its own conventional directory for its options files; and a TDP
such as oracle can specify a location for separate options via an
environment variable (dsmi_orc_config). Often, for sanity, the API
dsm.sys filename is actually a symbolic link to the B/A dsm.sys file,
wherein there is a separate stanza for API use, as named in the API
dsm.opt. Via such separations, it is possible to use Passwordaccess
Generate for running the TDP via scheduling, because that is just a B/
A client vehicle for running an Action=Command type schedule, to kick
off the TDP backup in its own environment. See the appendix in your
TDPO manual, which describes setting this up.

AW: [ADSM-L] Restore Linux system from TSM

2007-06-13 Thread Thomas Rupp
I've been looking for such a beast as well. There is a document for Windows
(http://www-1.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg21164812) but none for Linux.

What we did to BMR a normal linux box is:
* create a bootable linux CD (Knoppix) with a TSM client on it
* boot from this cd
* mount the disk drives
* restore all filesystems with the TSM client
* create all pseudo file systems not beeing backed up by TSM (/dev, /proc ...)
on the restored disk drives
* reboot

Betreff: [ADSM-L] Restore Linux system from TSM

I have a VMware virtual Linux server that had its DASD on an iSCSI device.
There was a failure of the iSCSI NAS device and the virtual image files
were lost. I have started over by creating a
very basic out-of-the-box Linux server (i.e. no service pack, no add-ons,
etc.)

I was just wondering if there are any white papers or other documents to
describe the best practices for doing
a restore of a Linux server via TSM?

Makes one wonder if excessive, delayed file system sync operations
were the issue, in writes. This might be tested by performing pure
read operations in the file system ('cp SomeFile /dev/null' is a
basic test, versus copying file to file).

I realize I'm chiming in very late on this one, but that is a consistent
problem with using Solaris boxes as TSM servers. Mounted filesystems give much,
much slower performance than raw filesystems for the database, recovery log,
and storage pools.

If it's Sun, it needs to be raw.

Re: Storage Pool Parameter: Migration Delay question

2007-06-13 Thread Joni Moyer
Hi Mark,

I went out and looked at the definition for migration continue and if I
set it to no, then it will only migrate files if they have been residing
in the storage pool for 30 days and with no exceptions.

If I leave that parameter as yes, then when the storage pool reaches 90%
it will migrate data to the next storage pool no matter if it has resided
in the storage pool for 30 days or not and will continue to migrate the
data until it has reaches it's low threshold (which I have at 50)?

I guess if I don't want to corner myself, then I could let migcontinue
stay as yes and increase the low threshold on this storage pool.

I appreciate you insight! Please let me know if I'm understanding this
parameter correctly. Thanks again!

Migration Continue
Select whether to allow the server to migrate files that do not satisfy
the migration delay time.
Because you can require that files remain in the storage pool for a
minimum number of days, the server may migrate all eligible files to the
next storage pool yet not meet the low migration threshold. Selecting yes
or no determines if the server is allowed to continue migrating files that
do not satisfy the migration delay time.

Yes
Specifies that when necessary to meet the low migration threshold, the
server continues to migrate files that do not satisfy the migration delay
time.
No
Specifies that the server stops migration when no eligible files remain to
be migrated, even before reaching the low migration threshold. The server
does not migrate files unless the files satisfy the migration delay time.

Note: This parameter is not available for storage pools using the
NETAPPDUMP, CELERRADUMP, or NDMPDUMP data format.

Hi Everyone,

I would like to have 30 days of data retained within the cdlb_aix (onsite
cdl) storage pool before it gets migrated to the tape_aix pool (onsite

I just want to make sure that I understand what I have defined. Will the
data remain in cdlb_aix for 30 days unless the pool hits its 90% full

to tape_aix? Or will it automatically move to cdlb_aix after 30 days?
Thank you in advance!

AFAIK, Knoppix is a close relative of Debian which makes use of .deb, not .rpm.
How do you install the client on it?

(Do you extract RPM and then manually implant the files???)

Re: ALL Tapes known to TSM

2007-06-13 Thread Robben Leaf
Welcome to the community, Daad!

1- TSM classifies tapes in three partially-overlapping ways: LIBVOL's are
the tapes that TSM knows about in an attached tape library; a Q LIBVOL
will show these volumes, including scratch tapes, and other tapes in the
library that aren't in storage pools. VOL's are all volumes (including disk
volumes) that are in any storage pools; Q VOL will show all of these
volumes. Scratch tapes aren't in storage pools. DRMEDIA are tapes that are
in any copy storage pools, plus any database backups (which aren't in
storage pools), whether these tapes are in the librarey or off site; Q
DRMEDIA will show all of these tapes. Between these three commands, you
should get all of the tapes that TSM knows about, many of them more than
once.

2- If a tape shows up as type=STGNEW in the volhistory, it's been checked
in as a new, empty volume; TSM doesn't know about any data that might be on
it.

If the TSM database doesn't know about the data on a volume, it won't be
able to get any data off of that volume. There are two exceptions: One, if
node data was exported to a tape with the EXPORT NODE command; then, the
IMPORT NODE command can be used to extract the information even if the
TSM database doesn't know about it. Two, if a backupset was made using
GENERATE BACKUPSET, the client can restore the data directly from the
tapes the data was written to.

Hope this helps!

Extend db question

2007-06-13 Thread Paul Dudley
This morning we received a TSM alert:

The database utilization is too high. Condition (85.1 85)
Recommendation: Consider a database space trigger or increase the size
of the database.

Going back through my daily TSM reports I have seen that the database
utilization has increased from 60% to 85% over the past few months. This
is to be expected as we are performing more backups than previously.

Is it correct that I should use the extend db command to do this?

The q db command shows that the database is 32 Gb in size. On the server
I have 24 Gb of free space so I have room to extend the size of the
database.

The one thing that confuses me is this statement in the help extend db
command:

Attention: You cannot change the size of an allocated database volume
after
it has been defined to Tivoli Storage Manager. If you do, Tivoli Storage
Manager may not initialize correctly and data could be lost.

Can someone clarify this statement for me and confirm that using the
extend db command is the correct way to do this.

Thanks
Paul

- Exclude the dsmerror.log itself from backup.
- Exclude temp areas (and browser caches, if possible).
- Code CHAngingretries with a reasonable value.

The ANS1802E message means that the backup did finish.
This is just a matter of iteratively tuning your backup options to
skip the unbackupable and retry what's worth retrying.

2007-06-13 Thread David Longo
That note in manual means the size of an individual DB Volume,
not the DB as a whole. There are more automatic extensions
of disks, filesystems, etc. these days - and more to come.

After you have formatted a DB volume with TSM, you shouldn't monkey
with it at the OS level.

Extend DB is what you want. Generally use size of DB volumes.
As say you have (6) 4 GB dbvols defined, to use one you would
enter: extend db 4000. The value is in MB.

This is if you have already use def dbvol to create the vol of course.

OK - when I run a q db the available space in MB is 32,768, the

I assume that this means that I have to run def dbvol to create

Any tips for someone making the leap of faith of migrating from z/OS to AIX

2007-06-13 Thread Gee, Norman
With TSM on the mainframe, I have access to console message automation
and tape media management with CA-1 or RMM.

I understand that with AIX, I will no longer have these functions
provided for me. On z/OS the tape library is manage by other mainframe
products. TSM on z/OS has no knowledge about the tape library on z/OS
other than the number of drives and the device types. SMS rules decides
on the tape media is correct and the system assign the tape drives. What
new TSM commands will I have to learn with AIX. z/OS version of TSM has
no concepts of library, library checkin or /dev/rmtn, ATAPE or other
unique Unix thing.

I have it setup with full message automation, highlighted console
messages, automatic emails and automatic responses to messages. How
would I set up something similar in AIX? Is there a joblog for the TSM
process similar to the z/OS STC message log?

Is there a white paper for someone making a similar transition?

With z/OS a lot of things are taken for granted or are handle by other
products.
