Are you running Exchange on MS Clusters? Was the database off-line when the
backup was run?

Gary,
You might try mapping a drive to where you would like to restore the data:
net use m: \\servername\e$
Then restore to the M: drive.

I know that this doesn't appear to have a direct affect on network
utilization but... Another setting that you may want to use is
MEMORYEFFECIENTBACKUP YES in the dsm.opt file.

I'm using 5.2.2.9 client to back up win2003 to a 5.2.4 server. Haven't had
any issues except with VSS. Those same issues with VSS were also present on
my 5.3.0 nodes.

Allen,
Thanks for the offer. We have our TSM servers and tapes located at a site
different from the nodes that are being backed up. Someone clever here
found this as a way to take care of off site backups without having to move
things to off site. So, in essence all of our backups are offsite.
Joni,
you could try adding and filespace_name like '/root_vdm_4/%'

Tim,
This is a common problem with the GUI. If files under the folder meet the
critieria but the folder itself does not then the folder is not displayed.
The most reliable method for doing point in time restores is to use the
command line interface: dsmc restore pitd=02/14/05
Egon,
The following is all based on Windows nodes. I'm not sure how it differs
for non Windows systems.
you can use the wizard in the TSM GUI to create the client acceptor and
scheduler service. You can also use it to create multiple scheduler
services. You need to give each instance a unique

Debbie,
we use the TSM ODBC client and Microsoft Access to get this information,
though I think MS Excel can also user SQL queries against the TSMODBC
client. You can download the ODBC client from:
There was a time and TSM server version where complex queries would crash
TSM. So, when using MS Access to connect via ODBC to the TSM database I
would import the TSM tables into the Access database and then run complex
queries against the extracted data. I'd do the extraction once a day and

Pull up the following link and do a find for string adsm.sys. You'll see
that there was a bug where certain client versions included the adsm.sys
folder even when explicitly excluded.
Debbie,
try select SCHEDULE_NAME, START_TIME, END_TIME, BYTES,
LastSess_Duration, FAILED, SUCCESSFUL from summary, nodes where entity
= node_name and end_time date()-1

Does anyone have a good way of determining if everything that was supposed
to back up actually backed up?
Larry,
There are problems with Domain Controllers running 5.3 client, that are
supposed to be addressed by the 5.3.1 release, where system objects don't
get backed up unless the copy group they are using is set to Dynamic
serialization.
As long as the ID you are using has local admin rights on
APAR IC41440. Another alternative recommended by tivoli support was to
backlevel the client to version 5.2.4.0

I'm not sure it is supported but it works for us when we run the TSM
Scheduler service with an ID that has rights to the UNC connections that
you are trying to back up. Then, put the shares in the domain statement in
the dsm.opt file.
domain c: d: \\servername\Home_ckpt_bk
This is pretty crude coding in a .bat file but it works for us:
@echo off
echo This will restore all the operating system components on the existing
echo %systemdrive% from the last successful TSM backup of this server.
echo It restores the systemdrive files first then SystemObject or
SystemState
You will need to complete the following steps before doing the restore:
1. ensure you have the same model hardware as the failed system
2. ensure the drives are the same number and size as the failed system
3. install the same Operating System, patches, and hotfixes as the failed
system
4.
John,
what do you get when you run the following command on CLANAS01?:
NET SHARE
This should show what shares are on which drives.
Also, there are a lot of files excluded by file extension that could
account for some of the missing files.

Have you checked for fragmentation on the NTFS drive to which you are
restoring? It could be that it has a large chunk of free contiguous space
on the drive that allows it to restore that portion quickly but then has
only small fragments of free space available for the remainder of the 32gb.

You could try parallel processing through setting the RESOURCEUTILIZATION 4

you can start the tsm backup archive client GUI from the nt machine. It
will prompt you for a password. Once you enter the password it will be
stored in the registry. Then you can restart your tsm services and it
should pick up the password from the registry.
