Re: Used 3494 / 3590 equip
IBM does have a program where they will pack up your 3590-H's and take them off your hands free of charge. We deinstalled 12 of them last week, and could not find any used brokers that wanted them. At least IBM's program will ensure proper disposal. Steve Roder University at Buffalo (s...@buffalo.edu | (716)645-3564) On Sat, 25 Jul 2009, Allen S. I'd be curious to know just how much money they're throwing away. When we did this exercise some years ago it was concluded that the market value of the 3590 drives was less than half the expense of banding them for maintenance. 3590 equipment is of negative value in the general market, and those folks who are still using it are aware of this, so difficult to trick into paying real money. If you're lucky, you'll find someone who's willing to pay for the shipping, if you give them away. - Allen S. Rout - Still has 10G 3590 tapes in his library, but they belong to someone else.

What would 3490-C2A worth. Less than nothing? They are probably worth less than the annual maintenance cost. -Original Message- From: ADSM: Dist Stor Manager [mailto:ads...@vm.marist.edu] On Behalf Of Allen S. I'll take it! Just kidding: I'm thinking this has some rather significant value. Try eBay... Depending on the criticality, it might be a negative value considering maintenance costs for old hardware. Best bet would be to ask those used/refurbished online places. There are companies that purchase old/used media, erase it, then resell it. David, If you want to email me individually, I can give you a line on both issues. We just retired a 3494, a 3584, and thousands of 3590 and 3592 cartridges about a year ago. Best Regards, John D.
