Re: [ADVANCED-DOTNET] Planning to keep the list alive

2008-09-16 Thread Sébastien Lorion
If Efran cannot for some reasons move the list to his servers, then I still
believe Google Groups would be the best option. Web interface is what you
would expect from Google and as far as spam is concerned, it can easily be
dealt with given the many options to control list membership. Same goes for
signal to noise ratio, it can go as far as an invite only list so only
"experts" are participating. The group is still there (
http://groups.google.com/group/advanced-dotnet) and I am waiting to see what
happens before deciding what to do with it.

As for StackOverflow, it is indeed a nice website, but I fear my inbox will
be flooded with messages I am not interested in and I will end
unsubscribing. Putting an advanced-dotnet tag is not going to cut it either
I believe. Just my opinion...

Actually it is :p It's equally usable via web or email. Personally I
prefer to use it via the web interface, although it's a pretty dated
interface now - far less user friendly than it could be.

Personally I like the near-complete absence of spam here and the advanced
nature of the discussion. And most importantly, I know of this list's
existence and don't have unlimited time to search out what other .NET
forums there might be and to assess how good they are. (Set against that,

I'm sure it's possible to avoid that, though perhaps only at a cost of
someone's moderation time and avoiding the most popular sites.

I'm one of the moderators on that list, and the list is hosted by LSoft
as a courtesy to the community (and also serves very well as an advert
for their commercial listserv software of course!)

I'm in no way connected to LSoft, but I'll gladly approach Nathan (the
visbas-l list owner the last I heard)

As it's a commercial product I don't hang much hope on it, but I'll see
what he says

It's a pity that the discuss.microsoft.com server is no more - that
would have been an ideal host!

What do you mean by that, use the hardware, software, both? I may be
wrong but I think that list is hosted by L-Soft as a service to the
community.

Wouldn't it be possible to host this list at the same server that hosts
the
VISBAS-L list?
Check it out at http://peach.ease.lsoft.com/scripts/wa.exe?A0=VISBAS-L.

Let's don't give up on Efran yet. If he is able to actually just move us to
a new list serve server then all is like it has been just a new email
address for posts (and to add to your white list on the spam filter).

Re: [ADVANCED-DOTNET] Planning to keep the list alive

2008-09-15 Thread Peter Ritchie
I think the reason people use this list is because it isn't based on a web
(HTML) interface. There's already numereous web-based sites that cover
the topics discussed on this list. If a web-based site were acceptable to
the subscribers of this list, they'd already be using one of the existing
sites.

If you move this list to another forum that does have a contemporary web-
based interfaace, you're going to get a high noise to signal ratio.

Re: [ADVANCED-DOTNET] Planning to keep the list alive

I really must disagree that it would be a perfect replacement/alternative.
I took a look at it and it's a nice site and I'm sure I'll visit it from
time to time and maybe even ask/answer a question or two.
Nevertheless, there is too much "noise" on that site; too many distractions
that take away the simplicity of this format for asking questions from our
peers. Additionally, this format is more personal in that the messages
appear in "your" inbox (something that I'm sure all of us check quite
regularly throughout the day) instead of visiting a website.
