To clarify you're supposed to use MX to point to a CNAME (mail.domain.com)
which then leads to an A (1.2.3.4)

We’ve found the dns by default points the mx to the @ record (master a record.)
I’d suggest changing mail.domain.com to point to an a record (probably a cname
or domain.com by default) to your cPanel server IP then point the mx to
mail.domain.com.
