Interesting...

Note also this:

http://research.cyc.com/

which apparently makes the full contents of the Cyc knowledge base
available to researchers in academia or industry, so long as they use
it only for research purposes...

Personally, my attitude on Cyc is:

* from all I have read and heard, I have relatively little enthusiasm
for their reasoning engine(s)

* their NLP technology does not seem to be dramatically cutting-edge

* their knowledge base is big and may potentially be useful to
in-development AGI's, though of course it is not on its own anywhere
near sufficient for AGI (in spite of some assertions to this effect
previously made by Doug Lenat and other members of the Cyc team)

Importing a bunch of knowledge from Cyc could never be the centerpiece
of a viable AGI effort, but it could potentially be a useful way of
increasing the knowledge of an in-development AGI system, that had
some conceptual understanding of the world via non-Cyc means (e.g.
embodied experience).

moterizer writes "After some 20 years of work and five years behind
schedule, OpenCyc 1.0 was [1]finally released last month. Once touted
on these pages as [2]"Prepared to take Over World", the upstart
arrived without the fanfare that many watchers had anticipated -- its
release wasn't even heralded with so much as an announcement on the
OpenCyc [3]news page. For those who don't recall: "OpenCyc is the open
source version of the Cyc technology, the world's largest and most
complete general knowledge base and commonsense reasoning engine." The
Cyc ontology "contains hundreds of thousands of terms, along with
millions of assertions relating the terms to each other, forming an
upper ontology whose domain is all of human consensus reality." So are
these the fledgling footsteps of an emerging AI, or just the babbling
   beginnings of a bloated database?"
