Well mysql-5.1 at least already has piuparts issues:

I would not be surprised if 5.5 does not have the same issue. that is a
different issue (install followed by purging) but still on the basis

have a /tmp where only root can create or delete files, I suspect that
this is rather a bug in the VPS.
However before I mark this wontfix I think it is worthy of some more

/run for example.

I can also reproduce this in 5.1. Since I cannot survive with such a
permissioned /tmp I deduce this is an issue with the install not
primarily mysql.

Thanks for the bug report. I had a feeling this was coming down the
line. I'll certainly put it in experimental but I think it rather more
important to go on unstable as well. Is there something I'm missing here.

issue and experiments on other machines with different hardware
suggested I have roughly the right config.
Anyway having given you this information I will check over the suggsted

When I install hwinfo it does not require hal. However I get errors
