Hi!
I’ve had an iPhone 8 for just over 2 weeks now and I’m very happy with the
phone and even happier with the release of the new IOS 12 which has improved
the phones performance but one thing at a time.
Firstly I would say to owners of older iPhones, if you care about the sound of
your iPhone or if you are yearning for far better quality sound from your older
iPhone then I certainly urge you - if you’re able - to upgrade to an iPhone 8
or an iPhone 8+ if you want the bigger screen, the speakers in the iPhone 8
just sound so much louder and clearer.
For an example I usually had the master volume of the iPhone 6s I was using set
to 100% and the speech volume set at 20%, the speech volume at 20% was “Loud
enough” to be heard quite clearly with the iPhone 6s some distance away but the
speech wasn’t too intrusive.
Now with this volume arrange meant on the new iPhone 8 the volume level of
speech is damn loud, you need to cut the volume down to 5% or even lower the
master volume of the phone altogether if you’re in a Doctor’s waiting room or
similar.
Anyway a good job done by the engineers at Apple in my view, still doesn’t
sound as good as my new Samsung S9 but every iPhone model I’ve upgraded to has
brought with it a significant enhancement in the speaker - or in the case of
the iPhone 8 speakers - audio quality.
As you can see I’m not at all concerned about a lack of a headphones socket and
I’m not even bothered that I didn’t get a dongle to plug into the dock
connector, I bought an Arcam DAC from my local Hi-Fi supplier which does for my
headphone listening so that’s sorted.
My iPhone 8 came with IOS 11 installed and I was very much underwhelmed as far
as performance went as it seemed to me that the 8 offered little more in this
regard than I was getting from the previous iPhone 6s I used.
IOS 12 has changed all that and I wait with eagerness to hear what the new
owner of my iPhone 6s finds when he upgrades the phone to IOS 12.
One of the great new features of IOS 12 is the redesigned Voice Memos App.
The interface is easy to get around and uncluttered plus you can perform
Lossless recordings in the M4A format.
I’m still to work out how to record in stereo which you’re supposed to be able
to accomplish now, does the iPhone 8 have stereo microphones as part of it or
do you have to use external microphones I wonder.
Incidentally for those who are wondering, the Samsung S9 does really nice
stereo recordings with its onboard microphones and I use an App with the
Samsung S9 called Easy Voice Recorder. Pro though I’m in no doubt that a
hundred audio recorder Apps or just as good are out there waiting to be
purchased <smile>.
