[sw-issues] [Issue 87176] offset page numbering conf using and unintuitive
To comment on the following update, log in, then open the issue: http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=87176 Issue #|87176 Summary|offset page numbering confusing and unintuitive Component|Word processor Version|OOo 2.4 RC5 Platform|All URL|https://bugs.edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/openoff |ice.org/+bug/118935 OS/Version|Linux Status|UNCONFIRMED Status whiteboard| Keywords| Resolution| Issue type|DEFECT Priority|P3 Subcomponent|ui Assigned to|mru Reported by|ccheney --- Additional comments from [EMAIL PROTECTED] Tue Mar 18 06:27:54 + 2008 --- I am filing an intentional duplicate bug of bug 52351 since it was closed invalid because the proper way to do it is very unintuitive and is unlikely to easily be found by the end user. However the improper and non-working way to do it is the easiest way to change it. 1. Insert->Footer 2. Insert->Fields->Page Number 3. Double click on the Page Number in the Footer 4. Change the Offset for the number 5. See that the page numbering stops when the page number exceeds the physical number of pages in the document Wonder why previous bug was closed invalid since this is the most intuitive way to set the page number and is considered to be wrong... At the very least the offset should not be allowed to be set if it causes a perceived bug. The "Proper" way to do it is much more complicated and probably would only be found by a user if they read a book on OpenOffice. (Or found the closed bug, which was the only way I determined how to do it properly) Format->Paragraph (!?) to set a page number, wouldn't that at least be slightly more intuitive if it was in Format->Page instead? Feel free to re-close this bug if you really want, but it really is a big usability problem. - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker. B) Similarly, intra-document cross-references disappear in the XHTML exports. An example ODT and its corresponding XHTML are attached. To see effect (A) simply click any entry in the TOC of the XHTML copy. To comment on the following update, log in, then open the issue: http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=87162 Issue #|87162 Summary|OpenOffice.org for law students and lawyers Component|Word processor Version|OOo 2.3.1 Platform|All URL| OS/Version|All Status|UNCONFIRMED Status whiteboard| Keywords| Resolution| Issue type|FEATURE Priority|P3 Subcomponent|formatting Assigned to|mru Reported by|daocampo --- Additional comments from [EMAIL PROTECTED] Tue Mar 18 00:09:49 + 2008 --- Appellate briefs need Tables of Authorities . For the non-lawyers out there, a ToA is a kind of sectioned bibliography for lawyers: it indexes all the various citations used in a document by type of authority (constitutions, statutes, regulations, case law, secondary authorities, etc.). MS Word and WordPerfect have table-of-authority builders built right into the program. Essentially, the ToA builder goes through the whole document, looking for anything that might look like it's a citation. Once it finds a possible citation, it stops: the user can then mark the citation and add it to an index. In the end, you end up with something that looks like this: TABLE OF AUTHORITIES BROWN V. BOARD OF EDUCATION, 273 U.S. 177, 93 F.2d 14 (1953)...1, 2 There, you see Brown, its full citation in Blue Book format, and the pages where it's cited. Now, OpenOffice and LaTeX should be able to do a simple trick like this--and do it better. But they're structurally different programs. Instead of treating the document like one long stream of text, they use a "structured document" model. Theoretically, the structured document should be better: you define the logical parts of your document and let the program deal with all the fiddly character-by-character design issues. To make this work, you need to have a separate bibliographic database, and then insert tagged references into the document as you go. Sounds good, right? Wrong. In OpenOffice, as in TeX, it's the bibliographic package (bibtex or some such) that generates the formatted citation. And, wouldn't you know it--there aren't any style files out there. - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker. [graphics-issues] [Issue 4499] Export to bitmap file has f ixed DPI (resolution)

As I said, I don't care about the semantics of this. Since pixel/length is what people normally are actually wanting, that is probably what should be actually used here (pixel/cm or pixel/inch). > In Adobe Illustrator CS3, everything has been moved to the document > creation dialog. Yuck. As someone who uses OOo Draw, this is the worst place to put it. This is an export setting not a document creation setting. > Why implement something in 20+ dialogs, when one can have everything put > logically in one place and control the whole document-creation process > in a unitary way? Why does this have to be in 20+ dialogues? There is only one raster export dialogue and this is the only place it needs to be. > As mentioned previously, CS3 seems to limit the PPI to only 3 values: > - screen: 72 PPI > - medium: 150 PPI > - high: 300 PPI Again yuck. That is a complete pain in the backside and provides me with yet another reason not to use CS3. Please go back and read *carefully* the two use cases I posted earlier. You may not think they are valid because you do not work that way. The fact is that others do and so the interface should allow them to do so. Your interface suggestion would require me to export from OOo Draw at the highest possible resolution and then resize the image in some other drawing tool such as the gimp, or use some other intermediate file format as the conversion tool (e.g. odg => pdf => png). These extra steps are what we are trying to remove here. > I bet 99% will watch at approx. 72 PPI. [And don't come with LCD > monitors. These are a travesty as every professional user can witness.] My laptop has 110 dpi. I have not even seen a computer with less than 96dpi for a very long time, even on CRTs. LCDs are a reality and remember that OOo Draw is there to be used by mum and dad making graphics for their website as well as a professional user. > As said, a 600 DPI Laser Printer actually prints at some 60-85 PPI (or [..] You have made your point. Please stop banging on about it. It's completely orthogonal to the question of being able to export the vector graphic at arbitrary resolutions. The feature request is not "please allow me to export the graphic at resolutions for printing" it is "please allow me to export the graphic at arbitrary resolution". > D.) COLOUR-SPACE This is also completely irrelevant to the current discussion. If you want colour space management in OOo Draw, then open a separate issue for it rather than confusing this one any further. > And I can only urge you to watch again the Adobe Illustrator tutorial. I did and it confirmed why I don't like it and why OOo Draw can be a much better program. > Now, I hope that everyone will understand why I insist on my previous > solution. It is in the best interest of OOo and its users. I wholeheartedly disagree. Your suggestions are fantastic for some use cases -- in particular the ones that *you* use. At the same time, they are horrible for many other users and from seeing how drawing programs are used widely by non-professionals this is a real use case. Please do not tell other people that they way they work is wrong and that they need to be protected from themselves. Please at least do us the courtesy of trying to understand what we are asking for and work others' requirements into your schemes rather than just declaring that you are an expert in the field and that only your ideas matter. Your experience and expertise is valuable to the discussion; so is the experience usage patterns of other users. If you look carefully at the other suggestions that have been made for how to provide this feature, you will see that their suggestions will allow you to do you work and also allow me to do mine. That's whole lot more powerful than something that satisfies only you. - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker. I don't get it. To quote the woodcutter in Rashomon: "I just don't understand." IF this whole issue is not about monitor resolutions (which, by the OOo default value of 96 PPI is way above most users monitors), and not about professional printing (max 300 PPI) then what it is about? I proposed a simple and comprehensive and correct solution. Now, I would like to add some further comments on this, but first I will start with a motto: Langsam's ornithological axiom: It's hard to soar with the Eagles when you work with Turkeys. Before we discuss anything further, I invite you to watch a tutorial for Adobe Illustrator CS3: http://www.adobe.com//designcenter/video_workshop/index.html?id=vid0284 Now, if OOo Draw wants to become competitive, it should compare itself with the de facto standards. For vector graphics, these are Adobe Illustrator and CorelDraw. [I appologise to Corel users because I stick to Adobe products, but - although I did have a valid, licensed Corel version in 1995, it never caught me up.] The complete discussion is posted on the UX-mailing list, please see: http://ux.openoffice.org/servlets/ReadMsg?list=discuss&msgNo=1452 - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker. But at this point (60k lines) you might also want to pre-process the data with python or friends... generate a digest which you'll display in OO. I hope it helps. [graphics-issues] [Issue 44297] Character problems while e xporting Impress to a ppt file
To comment on the following update, log in, then open the issue: http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=44297 --- Additional comments from [EMAIL PROTECTED] Mon Mar 17 21:17:40 + 2008 --- I attached zip archive (44297-pangram-test-case.zip) with some more files, that may hopefully help fixing this bug. Archive contains ODP and PPT files with some phrases in various languages. Those files were created with versions 2.3.0.1.2 (under linux), 2.3.1 and 2.4.0rc2 (under windows). Also attached a screenshot showing how these PPT files look like when opened with MS Power Point. This bug is really annoying, as there is no easy way to fix the corrupted font in PPT file in MS Power Point. When you select text and change font setting for selection, those "bad" characters remain unchanged. I guess that Sun ODF Plugin 1.1 for Microsoft Office shares the same import/export code with OOo, as original ODP files imported with this tool are behaving the same way in MS Power Point. - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker.
