is it possible for me to get the cardnumber (and thereby the hw:N
entry) for a given non-hw device (e.g. dspN, hw:N,M, dmix, ...)?
Try something like this:
/* Get the slave pcm of a pcm node. Caller must free the result. */
static snd_config_t

did you play a 4-channel sample file?
Ah, no I didn't. What I want is to play 2-channel samples on both
front and rear speakers and to be able to control the volume
independently.
doesn't it work

but that did not work.
When I did that, everything just played at half speed.
Can anyone give me any pointers as to where

Unfortunately i have to agree with Clemens. In my opinion the ALSA API
is giving the applications too much freedom in choosing parameters and
does not enforce any restrictions on hardware that can't support them.
I don't thing that freedom is a bad thing.

Greetings,
I have a problem with a 15 powerbook (from the new series introduced
recently). aplay -l says card0 is AWACS. I can get sound, but only on
the headphone jack. No matter which mixer controls I fiddle with, there
is no sound from the speakers. Also, the volume on the headphone doesn't
