I've noticed that a lot of the cards ALSA supports are capable of four
or more channel audio. However, in at least two cases that I've
investigated in depth, the driver supports only two channels (maestro3
and cs46xx).
Why is the four-channel sound capability of these cards not implemented?

I can confirm this an an Athlon with CM8738-6CH sound card, as well as
some other interesting related effects. These problems exist even if
rtcw/q3demo are called using the "aoss" wrapper script.

Those are the only two version that I have tried so far. This problem
is a recent one however. It exhibits itself when playing a DVD movie
(The Matrix, region one) with xine. I have spoken to a xine developer,
and he was of the opinion that it was an ALSA problem, not a xine one.
