Im curious to know if there is any way short of spdif cable between
headphone and linein jacks on my macbook to record what is being
played back. On other cards ive owned (desktop) ive had a stereo-mix
or mix-record option. I've used this often on my Audigy and my Turtle

Yup, you are using alsa-lib 1.0.14 which is known to be broken. You have
either to downgrade to alsa-lib 1.0.14rc3 (last working version), or to
upgrade to 1.0.15rc3

As far as USB, I have the M-Audio Mobile Pre and it works under alsa. But it
only does two tracks. And the one I have needs some solder work done on the
usb cable connector.
