I think SUSE is an rpm based system, so do this.
run command rpm -qa | grep -i pulse .
Look for the module alsa-plugins-pulseaudio
If it is there, remove it. That should stop pulse from
using alsa, clean up any modifications for pulse,
leaving it available for you.

enable digital passthrough with this device. The card works fine with stereo
output. Maybe you can tell me what I am doing wrong.

I've been using a Delta 1010 for a few years and prior to that a delta 66, I've never had these issues. ALSA seems to allow playback of any file and it will control the cards output rate. I never really touch that setting at all regardless of the sample rate of the file.
