With Bill's kind help, I have this working now. In Debian, there's a
/etc/modprobe.d directory instead of any modprobe config file. In that
directory was a file, alsa-base. I had to comment out everything in
that file and add these lines:
alias snd-1 snd-usb-audio
alias char-major-116 snd

Perhaps this is a software configuration issue.
I guess I could also find some audio with AC3 and determine if the
receiver process the channels correctly.
Something happened to my ALSA.
It plays sound through the regular speakers but not through the digital
out of the motherboard.
I can play DVDs through the digital out so I know the output should work.
It used to work.
