I tried forcing jack to use hwplug:sofhdadsp but got messages to say that I
shouldn't use that as conversion is
automatic, and it still produced the above error.

I feed into a pair of small powered studio monitors with that and the
sound quality is fairly good.

I've had that recently. However, I ran some updates which required a
reboot and
the noise has gone, at least for the moment. I'm running Firefox on
Ubuntu Studio 20.04

I'm currently working on an Arduino-based project which generates MIDI
output.
Under Linux it appears as a /dev/ttyUSB?. How can I persuade ALSA to
treat it as a MIDI
source (and possibly destination).
