Switching off the onboard sound card and putting a new sound card in the
computer did the trick.

It sounds like your problem is as follows, so please correct where this is
wrong:
1. Playing an MP3, or other sound file such as a WAV, which goes through the
ALSA PCM driver
2. Using a player such as aplay
3. Using a mixer control

If I play a MP3 file, I cannot control the sound by the Master in Kmix's
output.
The sound is controled by the PCM output.
I think it's a matter of a miss with the driver/mixer configuration.
But how can I determine that, and how can I solve it ?.
