I've recently acquired this laptop and decided to install Ubuntu 5.10 on it. The
problem is when booting.
When it tries to initialize the hotplug subsystem, the message "azx_get_response
timeout" gets spammed. The same happens in the latest stable release of Kanotix
(although some of the messages get suppressed).
I know for a fact that Ubuntu has alsa compiled into the kernel. I am not sure
about kanotix (maybe it is a module?), but Knoppix 4.0.2 does not have alsa at
all and it boots up fine with sound support. (It plays a "Initializing start up
sequence" when starting X and "Initializing shutdown sequence" when shutting the
system down).
I have tried turning acpi off during boot (acpi=off) and turning off apic and
lapic (noapic nolapic). Nothing seems to help. I even blacklisted the modules
which are supposed to get loaded (atiixp) and it seems like the problem I am
having is even before the modules being loaded. Knoppix loads the atiixp driver.
My laptop is based around the ATI Xpress 200M with built in video/audio with an
AMD Sempron 3000+ (1.8ghz).
I have tried seeking help in the ubuntu support channel, but got nowhere. I have
tried the alsa channel on freenode, but it doesn't seem to be active.
I really don't want to use Windows (my main system running Windows is enough)
...

Vyacheslav Goltser
