No it is not.
The light switches on as soon as you start playing sound.
As long as you are not playing, there is no light.

Just for the record: on a working card, the red light is always on?

Clemens
Hi All,
ok, issue solved: I installed a new card today (RMA procedure),
switched spdif on, and that was it!
So it looks like my issue was faulty hardware.
Thanks a lot for your help an support!

I was thinking the same...
in my 5 days of silence I returned the card and received a new one.
I will try again today.
Thank you for the pointers Rene, i will try aplay only as that seems
to be the best way to get this clear.
I will keep you all posted.

Then your hardware is probably broken.
Regards,
Clemens
Even though my hardware is completely different I will point out this
thing anyway, maybe it helps.
USB Audio and Asus Xonar Essence One.
VLC player and 44Khz files (flac, mp3, wav).
The problem is that with VLC in play the Xonar does not turn on the LED
which indicates the frequency, therefore do
right,
I did that, but that did not turn on the light
I'll try again.

Run alsamixer, go to the "S/PDIF" control, press "M".

Hi Clemens,
please apologise my stupid question, but HOW do I unmute this one?
(I have had some trouble with the naming all the time with aplay -D as well)
thanks,

This must be unmuted.
(And alsamixer renames this to "S/PDIF" because nobody knows
what "IEC958" means.)

This do not need to be enable
Hi Ralf,
thank you for your input. I am quite sure there "should" be light.
The card is specified for this.
I will check the connections again. Maybe I messed up with the molex
in some way.

In my experiences it's as Clemens said, there always should be light,
but ...
perhaps your card does provide optical and coaxial SPDIF and
Hi Clemens,
to be honest, this is the first time ever I am trying to use TOS an a
card, so I have no idea.
The result:
$ amixer contents -c 1
numid=2,iface=MIXER,name='Master Playback Switch'
; type=BOOLEAN,access=rw--,values=1
: values=on
numid=1,iface=MIXER,name='Master Playback Volume'

Dear list,
I have an issue getting the optical connection on the Asus Xonar STX
working in my system.
The molex is connected, the card is found by the OS (Debian Wheezy),
and the modules are loaded.
I can see the device, and the alsamixer is available. In there, I
unmuted the spdif/tos channel al
