I was able to easily give up when I realized my 5.1 speakers had a
button to push 2.0 sound to all 5 speakers. I'm still eager to hear if
anyone has a working 5.1 solution for this motherboard.

I have recently updated the kernel (2.4.21-166) and reinstalled Alsa,
(libs drivers and utils) I have the Via onboard 8235 and this version,
1.0.2, is way better, no pops and clicks and Quake3 is fine . I can
even use XQF's "Stop XMMS song before playing" feature, nice.
