greetings!

i have been configuring a fresh install of linux mint 14 - mate on my
studio pc.
originally the onboard nvidia hda soundcard was functional and the rme
multiface (PCI) wasn't.
so i researched that i need to install alsa to get them both functioning.
i installed alsa packages and also the hdsp mixer app and config tool
packages.

then i read the guide on the alsa website for hdsp multiface setup.

essentially i comprehend that i need to disable pulseaudio and replace
it with alsa; configure alsa and all will be well.

what i have presently is:

the sound option is no longer shown in the hardware section of the
mint's control center. no sound cards are logged in the os.

i think i am right in saying that this is the correct page for the
built-in nvidia sound chip:
http://www.alsa-project.org/main/index.php/Matrix:Module-hda-intel

and this if for the rme:
http://www.alsa-project.org/main/index.php/Matrix:Module-hdsp

i went through the extraction and make, install parts shown on the rme
page and saw some errors towards the end of the process. now when i
re-run the same commands i see permission denied messages (even running
sudo).

i never got as far as adding entries for soundcard configs into /etc/
modules.conf or an equivalent as no such file exists (That i have yet
found in linux mint 14 - mate).

is anyone willing to offer any assistance here? or can anyone point me
to a forum or chat where ones are that can assist?

thanks
