Thank you for your reply. The main differences between my kernel and
the default kernel are the processor type (Athlon vs. 486--though I
tried recompiling as a 486 with no joy) and less support for various
kinds of hardware. I enabled what I thought was the minimum required
for my system.
After some tedious trial-and-error testing, the offending kernel option
was: CONFIG_HIGHMEM4G. I have 1GB of RAM in my machine. By unsetting
CONFIG_HIGHMEM4G, Alsa works but I can only use 896 MB.
