I tried loading soundfonts and got the following.
maybe this is the reason I can't hear midi files
I ran sfxload and...
[root@aamehl aaron]# sfxload /mnt/cdrom3/audio/common/sfbank/ct4mgm.sf2
/dev/sequencer: No such file or directory
