Well, then do a fresh installation of ubuntu and try this:
http://ftp.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/people/tiwai/alsa/alsa-driver/alsa-driver-unstable-snapshot.tar.bz2
- just unpack and install over Ubuntu's ALSA, and then restart. See if
it still causes problems.
Don't use Realtek's driver, they are outdated.
BTW, what board is that?
