USB audio has its own set of issues with mixer control naming - also
dmix is not enabled by default for any USB audio device.

Why can't you just use "Front" as "Master"?

I too have some problems with alsa on my Z60m Thinpad, similar to what

When i boot my laptop, it sometimes hangs on attempting to load alsa.
It happens randomly, sometimes it starts normal, sound ok, everything perfect.
Sometimes it hangs on loading alsa modules, it just hangs on ::
loading snd-card-0.
by mistake i found out that i can skip this by hitting ctrl+print screen.
Then, i keep getting these messages in my syslog::

Having just logged another hda-intel problem[BT 2329], I am interested
in how the table entries in the existing driver were obtained. Do you
get information from the vendor, or do you reverse engineer the
interface from the Windows driver? I am happy to help decode the
Windows driver if necessary (although I will need to disinfect the
building afterwards ;).

Those are just harmless warnings. If you run "alsactl store" before
rebooting they should not appear on the next boot.

Hi,Lee.
I'm the one who use Hasee Q310N laptop and Gentoo. I don't
know if these information can help to solve problems.
The ALC861 I have tried 3stack, 3stack-dig, 6stack-dig, and
auto model options.
No matter which one I use, I will get these messages when
boot.

Try the latest ALSA sources from the HG repository, there were some

Since you only seem to have 2 channels, doesn't "Front" work as a
master?

SigmaTel STAC9200 (at least system-config-sound on FC5 says that).

The number of channels in alsamixer differs between reboots. On some reboots
I've got sound, on some not.

I'd be very happy to help with fixing it, just tell me what am I supposed to
do.

There's really no telling. It's misleading to say "snd-hda-intel is
supported" because every single laptop and motherboard with
snd-hda-intel is slightly different and there's absolutely no
documentation on what the differences are. Possibly the hardware is
oncorrectly detected. It's also possible that these devices simply have
no hardware master volume and Windows emulates it in software.

All these users can do for now is search for information about their
machine in the ALSA bug tracker and hope it gets fixed someday. (They
can also try the various model options for their codec described in
Documentation/ALSA-Configuration.txt).

[Alsa-user] snd-hda-intel no master control in alsamixer

2006-08-03 Thread Nigel Henry
Hi Lee, if your there. I've seen a couple of guys having problems with no
master control in alsamixer using snd-hda-intel driver. One posted to this
list, but in HTML, and probably was ignored (quite rightly), and is using a
Hasee Q310N laptop, and Gentoo. the other guy is trying to deal with the
problem on the Fedora list, with some help from another guy. He is using an
Acer Aspire ZWLMi notebook, with FC5.

The hda-intel driver is supported according to the sound card matrix, but are
there any odd problems with it? And why should the master volume control be
missing from Alsamixer.

I've posted the latest output the guy with the Acer notebook posted, in case
you might see anything jumping out at you which is obviously wrong.

[EMAIL PROTECTED] etc]# service alsasound restart
Shutting down sound driver: done
Starting sound driver: snd-hda-intel done
[EMAIL PROTECTED] etc]# rpm -qa |grep alsa
alsa-lib-devel-1.0.11-4.rc2
alsa-utils-1.0.11-4.rc2
alsa-lib-1.0.11-4.rc2

Tried playing and alsamixer. Still have no master volume.
Running system-config-soundcard now, here's the log:
