Well that makes two things with "Jack" in the name that I know nothing

2016-10-12 Thread marve
Chris, a.o.

I have tried Ubuntu Studio and Fedora 24 Live CD. Both didn't find the
optical S/PDIF connection.

BTW: I think we had a misunderstanding, as I noticed the Jack tools on
Ubuntu Studio:

I've been trying settings with HDAJackRetask, which is another kind of
Jacks, i.e. to change hardware settings and connections of the sound
chip and connectors (not the virtual sound system)!

Best regards,
M.

Chris, a.o.

Thanks again for your help and suggestions.

I have connected the PC to another receiver. The S/P DIFF TOSLINK
doesn't work on this system either, with 2 different optical cables. I
was able to make the connection with HDMI, sound and video on this newer
system.

I have tried Live CDs and the newest Ubuntu / Mint didn't work.

I also tried an older one to try the solution from the previous link,
but I couldn't install gstreamer-properties. I'll try and make a life
usb later!

Marve, what I mean here is have you tried other configurations that do
work, to isolate for certain that the problem is the Dell + Mint?

For instance, you say "a couple of weeks ago I checked my receiver with a
playstation". You should check it again.

Also, you should try a different TOSLINK connector that is (very recently)
known good, ideally the one you just used to check your playstation.

Finally it would be good to try your Dell optical connected to a different
receiver.

Do you see anything odd in syslog / with dmesg? Any error messages when
you start to try to play something?

Did you run alsa-info.sh and share with this list (sorry I forget)?

Have you tried using aplay with the appropriate device?

Seeing as you have Jack, Pulse and (I guess ALSA) installed... Not knowing
anything about Jack, have you tried booting from a live CD to see if sound
works without Jack?

doesn't make a difference.

I'm not sure what you mean!

I used to have windows 7 on my system, where the TOSLINK SPDIF worked
well. A couple of weeks a go I checked my receiver with a playstation
and this works, so the receiver isn't broken.

At the moment I'm using the internal speakers of my Dell. There are HDMI
outputs on the Dell, but my receiver hasn't got any of that. Only
optical and coaxial SPDIF (my computer only has the optical).

> Third, when you send audio to the device, does the situation change?
This is kind of annoying! When I open Pulse Audio Volume Control I can
select the Digital Stereo (IEC958) Output (Configuration) and the
Digital Output S/PDIF (Output Device). Then, when I "send audio" for
example, the volume meter on the Pulse Audio windows starts dancing, but
there is no sound coming from the speakers!

Yes, well, I don't think Dell has device software. There is a driver
from the chip manufacturer, which I tried to install manually. I think
this is incorporated in alsa already.

You are using Jack and it's safe to say I don't know jack about that... but
a few things I can think of.

First, the setting "Channel (in group): Back" - that doesn't seem to be a
useful setting. Wouldn't you want "Front" instead?

Second, I have spent endless hours futzing around with crappy intermittent

It seems that with Pin ID: 0x1e there is some response and this is the

Channel group: 8 ( I have tried them all)

Anyone suggestions I could try?
