Thanks for you help Clemens, but I decided to call uncle on the issue
and return the usb sound card. I replaced it with one from logitech
which works out of the box[1].

Are there ACL restrictions on this file? ("getfacl /dev/snd/pcmC0D0c")

Does accessing the device node directly work ("cat /dev/snd/pcmC0D0c"), i.e.,
is the resulting error something else than "No such file or directory"?

sorry for the confusion, after a reboot the usb devices were numbered
in a different order, with the
HyperX as 0, so I had to run `strace -e open arecord -D plughw:0
test.wav` to target the same device.

pcmC0* is card 0, a different device.

Did you really use "plughw:1"? Did you make any modifications to the "hw"
or "plughw" definitions in one of the ALSA configuration files?

Then I cannot explain the "No such file or directory" message.
What is the output of "strace -e open arecord -D plughw:1 test.wav"?

Sorry for being obtuse, I should have mentioned that I use pulseaudio and
that the microphone does not appear as an available input, pulseaudio
prints this in its log, when the card is inserted:

I get the following error:

$ arecord -D plughw:1 test.wav
arecord: main:828: audio open error: No such file or directory

What exactly does not work?

What happens when you run "arecord -D plughw:1 test.wav"?

alsamixer just shows mixer controls; choosing a device in alsamixer
has no effect on the rest of the system.
