Not exactly. Alexandre Oliva pointed out that you could also stay with
2.4.1.p1 but then you should apply the patches that you will find in
www.amanda.org. I went this way myself and I can tell you that it works
very well. Just keep an eye on the estimates AMANDA gets from the
Windows clients - if there is something that the patches somehow did not
correct, it will show up in this area (and in the error messages, of
course!). That's for the second problem.

For the first problem, it was also suggested that you create an
additional share comprising just the directories that you need to
backup. 

It is just unfair to say that "upgrade to a beta version" was the only
solution offered. There is always some risk in both ways. Either you go
for the current, official version and accept that you will have to patch
it (but all you need is just one patch, why bother so much?), or you go
for the "beta" one and accept its beta status. You'll have to take one
risk or the other, but the concensus is that the risk is acceptable
either way.
