is it possible with amanda to make a rait set consisting of only two
tapes, as to say just RAIT level 0 - striping without parity?
We have two DLT 8000 drives. Of course we could use them as a tape
changer, but I would prefer a stripe because of larger dumpable
partitions and higher

You should use 'null:' has your third tape device.
ex. rait:{tape:/dev/nst0,tape:/dev/nst1,null:}
You also need to upgrade your server 2.4.3b4.
