The question though is: will it stream continously in that range?

But there's generally a lower limit on those speeds. With LTO3, at least,
the lower limit is 1/2 the native rate. LTO3's native rate is 80MB/s, so
anything below 40MB/s and you're in trouble.

yes, you're right but it will stream for xfer rate in the range of
40-120MBs, at least for HP drives. Dunno about the others.

For a relatively buget offering in the changer arena we have used a ADIC
Scalar 24 (now Quantum) with LVD scsi LTO-2 drive for about 4 years. The
tape drive just failed so I'm the process of getting a replacement, but the
changer has worked nicely with Amanda up till now :) cost new about $12k.

Happy here with a ArcVault48 from Overland and a LTO4.
In my tests so far with 2.6.0p2 on a system not in production
I usually get +120MiBs and full 800GB on tape.
It is very cool to dump 800GB in less than 2hours!

I use a LTO4 drive purchased througn DELL with full satisfaction ...

The Quantum PX-502 Library (Rebranded HP LTO-3, 36 data tapes + 2 cleaner
tapes, SCSI data interface, web manageable) works extremely well and we've
received a persistent 72MB/s write performance over the last 18 months with
256KB block size.

We've had a Neo 4000 with 4xLTO-2 drives that's been humming along for
at least 4 years now. I don't know the earliest version of Amanda that
was used against it, but when I joined the organization, it was at
2.4-something, we upgraded it to 2.5.

As Roy says, nothing fancy, just solid hardware.

We've had great luck with equipment from Overland Storage. We've
kept a Neo-2000 library with dual LTO-3 drives busy for 3 years now
with no problems so far. Other departments here have had similar
experience with Overland equipment: not fancy, but very solid.

I have a Dell PowerVault 124T (16-slot changer with an LTO3 IBM drive,
connected using SCSI) and a Dell PowerVault TL2000 (24-slot changer with
an LTO4 IBM drive connected using SAS), both work with FreeBSD and

RE: LTO drives

2008-10-27 Thread Onotsky, Steve x55328
Hi Nick,

We have a Dell ML6020, which as I understand is a rebranded Quantum/ADIC
Scalar i500, which is itself a rebranded IBM product (I think the T3310,
but I could be wrong).

The drives in this thing, as we ordered it, are four IBM ULTRIUM LTO4
fibre channel drives, which we connected directly to our SAN switches.
There's an option in the library for a fibre blade, which allows for
path failover, but we were on a budget.

With an RHEL 5 host as the Amanda server (version 2.6.0p1), the biggest
headache was finding, installing and configuring the drivers for the
drives themselves. However, the changer showed up immediately as an sg
device that I could control with mtx.

Once I found the drivers, buried deep on one of IBM's ftp sites, I was
able to access the drives.

I have no major complaints about this library. If the 6020 is a bit
much for your needs (128 slots, up to 6 LTO3/4 drives, SAS/FC
connectivity, auto-cleaning, LTO4 library-managed encryption), you might
want to look at the 6010, or perhaps something from the TL4000 or TL2000
line. Or look at a comparable IBM or Quantum product, whatever gives
you the best bang for your buck.

For us, the first consideration was encryption (offsite storage), second
was cost; we had an existing relationship with Dell (thus the great
deal). The 800GB uncompressed cartridge capacity is gravy. :)

Cheers
