Eureka! It seems I had a bit of a compound problem. there *was* an issue with the log files, but after I followed your advice and put the logfile back into $logdir, amanda seemed to dislike the fact that the tape wasn't rewound (but didn't bother to report it :/). after doing an mt r and having the log file in the proper location, it worked like a champ.
