today I called it "release 6.9".
The "commits" part is quite simple.
- r2452 -- only doc/source/index.rst
- r2453 -- copy of trunk as release/6.9
- r2454 -- in trunk increment version strings (3 files)
There is some more work in creating the tar balls.
