For years I have used SpectraPlus. They sure seem to be pricey these
days,
since I have purchased the software. Here is the link:

Depends on the laptop.
The Sony I have seems to run the audio stuff ok even with the power supply
hooked up.
The downside is, the sound cards in laptops are usually low end, no line in
and out, only mic and headphone jacks
